Parish Pride

By Dolores Madlener

St. Raphael Church

2101 E. 111. Rte. 173, Antioch

A new parish is growing in Lake County. It's on the former Pederson farm in Antioch. Farming and new parishes take faith and work. St. Raphael's will have plenty of both. Founded April 30, 2007, there is an office, a temporary church in the renovated machine shop, and a parish hall in an adjoining farm equipment showroom. Its barn is where chickens and geese are helping to pay for parish upkeep. At the first Masses, Sept. 1-2, parishioners came from over-crowded churches of St. Patrick, Wadsworth, and St. Peter in Antioch. They found an “unexpected” beautiful house of God that utilized traditional artifacts and statues from treasured churches closed in Chicago, like the crucifix and pews from Blessed Sacrament on the West Side, and the tabernacle, presider's chair and pulpit from St. Ethelreda on the South Side. In five years a new edifice will rise about a half-mile east of here, but for now, Cardinal George will celebrate Mass and bless these facilities at 6 p.m. Sept. 29, the feast of the archangels.
