St. Charles Borromeo
1637 N. 37th Ave., Melrose Park
Founding parishioners gathered for Mass at the Scalabrini Missionaries’ Sacred Heart Seminary in Stone Park for five years. Then in 1942, Cardinal Stritch approved a new parish that would also include part of Northlake.
Today’s 2,000 young Latino families plus some older English-speaking worshippers embody the new St. Charles Borromeo. Generally 50 babies are baptized here monthly, and while there are “no great collections,” it thrives. Families and church clubs rent the two parish banquet rooms for celebrations every Saturday evening. Faith and life abound. There are adult and teen folk dancing groups, marching bands, choirs, novenas, carnivals and a large CCD program. Everyone is encouraged to get involved.
Some people said this parish was “on the brink” 15 years ago. Now they praise the new reality that makes room for everyone.
