St. Germaine Church
9800 S. Kolin Ave., Oak Lawn
When parishioners say, “there’s something going on here all the time,” they mean worship, adoration, education, Scripture study, variety of prayer, men’s and women’s societies, “Time Out for Moms,” Christ Renews His Parish weekends, a 60-member “Yahoo Group” on the parish Web site; St. Vincent de Paul outreach, a welcoming space to support single moms (“Courage”) and for mentally or physically challenged children or adults (“God’s Special Friends”), and more. The sprawling cream-colored combination church/school, dedicated in 1966, was envisioned by Ralph H. Burke, Inc. The interior design provides an unobstructed view of the altar and seats more than 1,000. Modern stained glass windows are vivid in primary colors. St. Germaine, patroness of abused children, is depicted in the church and in a statue in the garden. Older and younger parishioners blend well here, and party together at seasonal gatherings like summer’s picnic and this year’s Harvest Ball on Nov. 12.
