Our Lady of Peace Church
7851 So. Jeffery Blvd.
Come for the splendorcatch the spirit. “Our Lady of Peace” was a new Marian title when the parish was founded on the anniversary of the Armistice in 1919. This permanent church was built in 1933. Designed by McCarthy, Smith & Eppig in an Italian Renaissance style with the main altar of Belgian Blue marble, it reflects a different era. An ornate canopy over the altar is flanked by two larger-than-life marble angels. Its massive stained glass windowsa sacred canvas of color and light. With 375 families, it remains a hub of faith, from the Knights and Ladies of Peter Claver to programs geared especially to youth, as future church. Combining some events with neighboring St. Philip Neri Church, like catechetical formation, socials or a community food pantry, helps build a bond beyond parish boundaries. Economic challenges in the area are complex: rising real estate values, and more rent-subsidized apartments here than in any other community. Yet they abide.
