Parish Pride

St. Louis de Montfort
8808 S. Ridgeland Ave., Oak Lawn

When this second church was built here in 1981 (and the first was transformed into a parish hall) the innovative semi-circular edifice, with its tabernacle in a side chapel and theater seating, became a prototype for several other churches. While many of the original residents remain, they are encouraged as a community of believers to avoid the status quo. In addition to an ongoing faith enrichment series for adults, the “Whole Parish Catechesis” program will begin here in the fall. The parish Web site and Sunday bulletin are also evolving into an interactive dialogue between staff, organizations and people in the pews. A peace garden, communal prayers for peace in the chapel at 8 a.m. Fridays, and making sandwiches for the Port Ministry are some of the ways parishioners focus on peace and justice issues. Work and prayer helps develop community here, and so does the yearly Oktoberfest, following 5 p.m. Mass Sept. 17. The welcome mat is out.
