Assumption BVM Church
2434 S. California Ave., Chicago
“Trying to make our church a place people want to come to, rather than walk past,” is the goal of this parish of young (mostly Mexican) working families in the Pilsen area. Its brick edifice, built in 1903, is not big. The interior is simple, adorned with a few medallion windows, but worshippers feel a warmth, like they know each other, even if they don’t. Originally a Slovak parish, most of today’s Hispanic immigrants have been here about 20 years. Many move to the suburbs, but return for the familiar liturgies at Assumption. Kolbe House, an archdiocesan agency dealing with persons in the criminal justice system, has offices on the premises and parishioner-volunteers. Families in trouble often worship here, so homilies “get real.” St. Maximilian Kolbe’s feast, Aug. 14, and the Blessed Mother’s on the 15th, traditionally call for an outdoor Sunday Mass and picnic that draws nearly 1,000 visitors.
