Mother of God Church
14148 Green Bay Ave., Burnham

If there is a “bungalow church,” this is it. Mother of God may also be the smallest church in the archdiocese. It has no stained glass windows, but a big heart. Where is Burnham? Parishioners answer, “Between Hegewisch and Cal City.” If you like fishing, Powder Horn Lake is within its boundaries, and Burnham Woods Golf Course is not far. While there is a mix of ethnicities today, neighbors who moved out to the ’burbs or to towns in nearby Indiana come “home” for special feastdays and events like bake sales and pot luck dinners. Scripture classes are ongoing and well-attended. With 170 families, they have been able to keep up repairs, replace the roof and refinish pews without going into debt. Worshippers here are devout, first of all. Many come 20 minutes early for Mass, bringing their prayer books. Some of its hardy retired mill workers even bring their grandchildren. .
