St. Agnes of Bohemia
2501 S. Central Park Ave., Chicago
Parish history started here July 5, 1904. That day a church for Czech immigrants was dedicated to Blessed Agnes, now known as St. Agnes of Bohemia. A bigger Renaissance style edifice, designed by Joseph B. Rezny, was built in 1926.
The story of growth was repeated with Latino immigrants who moved here in the 1970s. This is the largest Hispanic parish in the archdiocese, with more than 6,000 attending Mass each Sunday; more than 100 weddings and quinceañeras (XVs) each year; and more than 40 parish clubs.
Priests and sisters are a presence in its flourishing school. The parish web site has an interactive message board for information exchange, and they may discuss the Sunday homily or the possibility of forming a Third Order Franciscan group.
With a spring musical based on Broadway’s “Annie” and a parish Folklorico ensemble for adults and youngsters that has entertained the city since 1989, it is a busy parish, and a wonderful place of welcome.
