Holy Family Church
450 Keller Ave., Waukegan
The image of Christ here symbolizes death, resurrection and ascension. The parish has gone through similar stages, from the merging of Waukegan’s St. Bartholomew and St. Joseph parishes in 1991 and ultimately, because of parish growth, moving on to a new location.
The purchase of the Assembly of God Calvary Temple in 2000 brought more changes. A major renovation included opening up walls with glass for natural light, and a dramatic mural painted by Arnoldo Martinez to depict the parish’s new name chosen by consensusHoly Family.
Mementos from St. Joseph and St. Bart’s have helped forge traditions, and a montage of five stained glass windows from St. Bart’s will soon become one huge wall.
While the mostly Mexican congregation keeps growing, its ecumenical social justice arm continues to maintain a soup kitchen and homeless shelter at their original site, enlarged and remodled in freed-up space. The young parish has five acres to grow on. Who knows what tomorrow brings?
