Parish Pride

St. Gerald Church
9310 S. 55th Court, Oak Lawn

Before its official founding as a parish in 1934, St. Gerald had been a “mission” for 13 years. As Oak Lawn developed after World War II, its worshippers increased and a number of parishes have subsequently grown from St. Gerald's original boundaries.

A modern church designed by Pirola & Erbach was dedicated here in 1958. Even though a devastating tornado tested the resilience of parishioners in 1967, they rebuilt their lives and went ahead.

With continued growth, Christmas 2004, saw another milestone. The original rectangular worship space was configured into a broad semi-circle. Architects Cone, Kalb and Wonderlick achieved an open design, moving the new sanctuary to another wall, and bringing in natural light and lofty airiness. Rich wood church furnishings completed the renovation.

While the faithful here believe in miracles, they also believe in responsibility. Their generosity to the Millennium campaign has made it all possible.
