St. Turibius Church
5646 S. Karlov Ave., Chicago
There are a number of churches on the city’s Southwest Side, not far from Midway Airport, each with a story to tell. Founded in 1927, as a predominantly Polish parish, St. Turibius struggled through the depression years with a small frame church until 1952.
The interior of this simple brick edifice was made simpler after Vatican II. For its 75th jubilee in 2002, Polish artist Henryk Wojcikowski executed an eye-catching hand-carved wood altar with a unique frontispiece of the Last Supper.
Today’s tri-lingual faith community faces challenges of mortgages and low wages, not of fervor or involvement. Mass and devotions are well attended. There are vital school mothers and fathers clubs and many other groups. The Felician Sisters’ service in the school is also honored.
To mark the 400th anniversary of the death of St. Turibius (archbishop of Lima, Peru), there will be a novena at 7 p.m. from March 11 through 23, closing with a Mass and fiesta.
