St. Peter Canisius
5057 West North Avenue
A parish that's been in existence for 82 years has some history yet is timeless. This imposing Romanesque-style edifice, designed by Meyer & Cook, was built for mostly Irish, German, Italians and Poles in 1936 when the parish was 11 years old. It wasn't until the last 15 or 20 years that Mexicans, Puerto Ricans and Filipino families have taken up residence here in greater numbers. Notre Dame High School for Girls began here in the 1930s, in two classrooms of the parish school once staffed by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. Today a CCD program flourishes for first-graders through high school. The Block Rosary for Peace was organized at St. Peter Canisius during WWII and was maintained for decades. Our Blessed Lady is still honored here as Our Lady of Guadalupe and Our Lady of Providence. Today's parishioners get involved. They work hard and pray hard.
