School Sister of Notre Dame Rose Gentile (Mary George), 93, died June 20 at Resurrection Life Center. She entered the congregation in 1938. She taught high school sociology and history for 37 years. In Chicago, she taught at Academy of Our Lady. From 1978-93, she coordinated the Meals on Wheels program at MacNeal Memorial Hospital, Berwyn.
John Costello

John “Joe” Costello, 80, the father of Father Daniel Costello, died July 14 in Spokane, Wash. Father Costello, the pastor of St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, presided at the July 19 funeral Mass in Spokane.
Sr. Jean Erlon

Dominican Sister Jean Erlon (Mechtilde), 93, died July 1 at St. Dominic Villa, Sinsinawa, Wis. Born in Peoria, Sister Jean made her final profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican in 1938. She served as a teacher and school librarian. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Jean taught at St. Brendan (1935-40) and St. Thomas More (1951-60). She served as the support staff/transportation driver at Queen of Peace Ministry Center, Burbank, (1986-90) and at St. Thomas Apostle Convent (1990-92).
Sr. M. Laurus Slee

Holy Cross Sister M. Laurus (Theresa) Slee, 75, died July 21 at the University of Chicago Hospital. She served as a teacher and principal at schools in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Washington D.C. and Maryland. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at Most Holy Redeemer School in Evergreen Park (1951-54), St. Michael’s School (1977-78) and Holy Trinity High School (1998-2006).
Sr. Bibiana Singer

Dominican Sister Bibiana Singer, 93, died July 18 in Adrian, Mich. She served as a teacher and principal for 40 years at schools in Illinois, Michigan, Florida and New York. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Joseph in Homewood (1935-39) and St. Edmund in Oak Park (1958-63).
Sr. Mary Arnold Ramel
Educator, pastoral care
Felician Sister Mary Arnold Ramel, 86, died July 8. Born in Chicago, she entered the congregation in 1937. She taught at schools in Illinois and Wisconsin for 10 years. She also ministered as an x-ray technician at hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin for 21 years. She received certification in pastoral care and then served as a certified pastoral director and pastoral care associate at health care institutions for another 27 years. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she ministered at Sacred Heart School (1937-38), St. Bronislava School (1939-42), Holy Rosary School in North Chicago (1954-55) and St. Bruno School (1955-56).

Dominican Sister Agnes Charles (Margaret) Spoutz, 84, died July 17 in Adrian, Mich. She served as an educator in Illinois, Michigan and Florida. In Chicago, she taught at St. Carthage (1941-43) and Queen of Angels (1947-48).
Sr. Macarius Kuehn

BVM Sister Macarius Kuehn, 74, died July 31 at Northwestern Hospital following surgery the previous week.
Born in Milwaukee, she entered the BVM congregation in 1950. She served as an educator in Chicago for 45 years, primarily on the West Side. Most recently she was a teacher at St. Mary of the Lake School (2003-06). From 1995-2003 she was principal at Our Lady of the West Side Catholic School. She served at St. Agatha as principal and teacher from 1974-81. She also taught at St. Thomas Aquinas, Blessed Sacrament, Holy Cross, St. Laurence and St. Philip Neri.
Sr. M. Hilary Hacker

Sister of Christian Charity M. Hilary Hacker, 89, died Aug. 1 at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette. She entered the community in 1935. Sister M. Hilary served as a teacher at Mallinckrodt High School, Wilmette (1949-60) and Josephinum High School (1966-67). Between 1951-60 she taught at both Mallinckrodt High School and Mallinckrodt College. From 1953-56 she was dean and principal. She held the office of Aspirant Mistress (1952-60), served as provincial councilor (1974-76). She was the librarian at Mallinckrodt College (1988-91) and at the motherhouse library (1991-97).
Sr. M. Julitta Kozielska

Holy Family Sister M. Julitta (Alvina Kozielska) died July 11. She was a member of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth for 49 years. She taught at several elementary schools in the archdiocese and served as the director of occupational therapy at Nazarethville Nursing Home, Des Plaines, from 1974-2004.
Sr. Catherine Hayes

Providence Sister Catherine Hayes, 89, died July 18. Born in Chicago, she entered the congregation in 1936. She served as a teacher for over 45 years at schools in Indiana, Illinois, California, Washington D.C., Florida, Oklahoma and Taiwan. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she served as a teacher and principal at St. Athanasius in Evanston (1951-53) and as a teacher at St. Genevieve (1953-54).

Dominican Sister Mary Catherine (Eileena) Hughes, 97, died July 31 in Sinsinawa, Wis. She made her first profession in 1930. In Chicago, she taught at St. Sabina (1936-41), St. Barnabas (1947-51), St. Basil (1957-60) and St. Cajetan (1972-73). She also ministered as support staff at the Dominican Motherhouse in Sinsinawa from 1987 to 2002.
