Fr. Joseph J. Kinane
Diaconate director

Fr. Joseph J. Kinane, 79, pastor emeritus of St. Paul of the Cross Parish, Park Ridge, died July 14.

He grew up in Little Flower Parish on the South Side and graduated from Quigley Preparatory Seminary and the University of St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein. He was ordained in 1952.

Fr. Kinane’s first assignment was to St. Matthew Parish on Walnut Street (now closed), from 1952-61. He also served at St. Mark’s until 1966 and at Holy Name Cathedral from 1966-69.

He was pastor at St. Sebastian Church (now closed) from 1969-76 and then resided at St. Eulalia Parish, Maywood, while serving as archdiocesan director of the Permanent Diaconate (1976-1983), as an area dean, and as a member of the Pastors’ Review Board.

Before becoming pastor of St. Paul of the Cross (1983-96), he was administrator at St. John Chrysostom Parish, Bellwood (now closed). The native South Sider spent his retirement years at St. John Fisher Parish.
A Mass of Christian burial took place at St. Paul of the Cross July 17 with Cardinal George and Bishop Timothy Lyne presiding.


Sr. Claudia Lewis
Educator

A funeral Mass for Sister of Providence Claudia (Mary Margaret) Lewis, 97, was offered May 25 at the church of the Immaculate Conception in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind. Sister Claudia, was a Chicago native who entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence in 1925. She professed first vows in 1929 and final vows in 1934.

She taught in Indiana, Illinois, Massachusetts, California and Texas.


Rita Anton
“Renaissance woman”

A funeral Mass was offered for Rita Kenter Anton, 85, June 22 at St. Stephen, Protomartyr Church, in Des Plaines. She died June 16 in Albany, Ill. where she had lived since 2002.

She attended St. Pascal Grade School and Our Lady of Angels Academy, Clinton, Ia. She and Alfred Anton raised five children in St. Giles Parish, Oak Park. In 1964 Doubleday published a book Mrs. Anton wrote about their life, “Pleasant Company Accepted.”

A real estate agent who also earned a degree in communications at Northwestern University, Mrs. Anton visited India on behalf of the Father Albert Nevett Fund for the education of outcast Indian children. Following her husband’s death in 1976, she spent seven years in Nepal as a volunteer Jesuit Lay Missionary. Her second book, “The Far-Off Hills,” published in 1979, described her experiences.

She worked first as a secretary in the Archdiocesan Center for Pastoral Ministry in the early 1970s. She became one of the pioneers in the archdiocesan Phoenix Office for widowed and divorced persons, later becoming co-director.


Sr. Eileen Hussey
Educator

Adrian Dominican Sister Eileen (Kevin Maureen) Hussey, died June 16 in New Mexico. She was 80.

She spent 28 years as an educator in Illinois, New Mexico and Texas. In Illinois, she was a teacher (1944-57) and principal (1957-63) at St. Edmund School in Oak Park. She also taught at Our Lady of Knock, Calumet City (1963-65) and St. Laurence (1963-67).


Sr. Ellen Carroll
Educator

Dominican Sister Ellen Carroll, 68, died June 18. Born in Columbus, Ohio, she made her first profession of religious vows as Sr. Anastase in 1962.

In Chicago, she taught at Visitation Grade School (1974-76) and St. Basil School (1976-77). She ministered at St. Philip Neri School (1977-82) and was a pastoral associate at Holy Family Parish (1984-91). She returned to Visitation Grade School as executive director from 1991 to 2001 where she began a scholarship program.


Sr. Ernest Marie Milewski
Educator

Felician Sister Ernest Marie Milewski, 79, died June 11 at Our Lady of the Angels Convent, Chicago. Born in Portage, Wis., she was a Felician for 58 years. She was an educator and served in the finance departments of several institutions in Wisconsin and Illinois. In Chicago, she ministered at Holy Innocents (1948-49), St. Helen (1949-50), St. Joseph on South Hermitage (1950-52, 1959-60, 1963-75), St. John of God (1952-53), St. Hedwig in Niles (1954-56), SS. Peter and Paul (1957-59), and Good Counsel High School (1983-86, 1990-92).


Sr. M. Humiliata Rykaczewski
Educator

Felician Sister Mary Humiliata Rykaczewski, 85, died June 4. Born in Chicago, she entered the Felician Sisters in 1939 and professed final vows in 1947.

She taught at schools in Illinois and Wisconsin including Holy Rosary (1941-1944), St. John of God (1947-1951), St. Hedwig in Niles (1951-1960) and Good Counsel High School (1966-1998). She was a published poet.


Sr. Helen McCarthy
Educator

A funeral Mass for Sister of Providence Helen (Alma Francis) McCarthy, was celebrated June 28. She died June 23 at age 90. Born in Chicago, she attended St. Agnes Grade School and professed final vows in 1940.

She taught at schools in Indiana, Illinois and the District of Columbia. In Chicago she taught at St. Angela (1935-36), St. Mel (1940-45), St. Athanasius in Evanston (1951-55, 1969-72), St. Leo (1945-46), St. Francis Xavier in Wilmette (1962-68), Imaculate Conception (1972-77), Our Lady of Mercy (1977-83), and tutored at St. Genevieve (1987-98).


Sr. John Michael Dee
Former college president

BVM Sister John Michael Dee, 101, former president of Mundelein College, died July 10. Born in Kansas City, Mo., she graduated from the University of Kansas and served on the faculty of Kansas City Junior College before entering the BVM congregation in 1927. She professed first vows in 1929 and final vows in 1935.

She served at Mundelein College for 27 years; she was a faculty member in psychology (1930-51) and president (1951-57).

She was director of Our Lady of the Cedars Retreat House in Lake Villa, for 12 years, and regional representative for the BVM congregation.
