Sr. Andrea Vaughan
Teacher, social worker
Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul Sister Andrea Vaughan, 84, died May 20 at Seton Residence in Evansville.
Born in Nashville, Sister Andrea entered the Daughters of Charity in 1941. She served as a teacher in San Francisco and New Orleans, opened a treatment center for disturbed adolescent girls at St. Vincent Group Home in Milwaukee and was assistant director of community mental health at DePaul Hospital in New Orleans.
From 1969-1977, Sister Andrea was the administrator of the St. Vincent de Paul Center, Illinois’ largest day care center.
For the next nine years, she served as the director of Catholic Charities in Nashville. After that, she was the administrator of Seton Manor in Evansville for three years.

Edward L. Boggio
Deacon
A funeral Mass for Deacon Edward L. Boggio, 81, was offered May 25 at St. Marcelline Church, Schaumburg.
Born in Springfield, Mass., in 1923, he was the first commissioner of the Schaumburg Athletic Association and co-founded Schaumburg’s Kings Hockey League.
Ordained a deacon in 1984, he ministered at St. Marcelline Parish. With his wife Valerie, he founded its St. Vincent de Paul society and was a board member of WINGS.

Dolores A. Chiaramonte
Director’s sister
A funeral mass for Dolores A. “Cookie” Chiaramonte, nee Van Den Hende, was offered June 7 at St. Stephen, Deacon and Martyr Parish in Tinley Park. Ms. Chiaramonte, who died on June 3, was the sister of Fred Van Den Hende, director of Human Resources for the archdiocese.
She is survived by her husband, Richard N.; her children, Regina McDonald, Rick, Dave and Dianna Yore; and nine grandchildren.

Fr. Charles LaVerde
Scalabrinian pastor
A funeral Mass for Missionary of St. Charles (Scalabrinian) Father Charles LaVerde, was offered May 26 at St. Charles Borromeo Church, Melrose Park.

Father LaVerde was ordained in 1957 at St. Francis Xavier Cabrini Church, Chicago. He began his priestly ministries in Australia and then served as pastor and associate in the United States and Canada.
In the Archdiocese of Chicago he was associate pastor at Our Lady of Pompeii and Santa Maria Addolorata.
Father LaVerde became pastor of St. Francis Cabrini and St. Anthony parishes. He was spiritual director at Sacred Heart Seminary, Stone Park and served as an Air Force chaplain from 1968-1973.

Rudolph C. Schoewe
Deacon
A funeral Mass for Deacon Rudolph “Rudy” Schoewe, 79, was offered May 31 at Our Lady of Victory Church on the North Side.
A World War II Navy veteran, he was ordained a deacon in 1976 and served at Our Lady of Victory Parish for 29 years.
He received the St. Francis Award and was a St. Jude Police League Chaplain. Deacon Schoewe had also received the Outstanding Service Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award from Boy Scouts of America.
He had worked for over 40 years in the insurance field.
Deacon Schoewe is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dolores, four daughters, six sons, 25 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Fr. Casimir V. Polinski
Pastor, teacher
A funeral Mass for Congregation of the Resurrection Father Casimir V. Polinski, 87, was offered May 18 at St. Hedwig Church.
Born in Chicago, Father Polinski graduated from St. Hedwig School and Archbishop Weber High School. He made his final vows in 1937 and was ordained in 1944.
Father Polinski was associate pastor at St. John Cantius Church, St. Hyacinth Basilica and for the past 20 years at St. Hedwig Church. He also was pastor at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church and Holy Trinity Church as well as a teacher at Gordon Tech High School.
Father Polinski served in Alabama, Florida, New York and Canada. He is survived by his sister Cecilia Wisniewski.

Sr. Alice Graniczny
Educator
A funeral Mass for Sister of St. Joseph Alice Graniczny was offered June 7 at Immaculata Congregational Home in Bartlett. Sister Alice, born Bronisia Graniczny, entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Third Order of St. Francis in 1933.
She was an elementary and high school home economics teacher in Wisconsin, Indiana and Illinois.
Fr. Edward A. Slosarcik
Served Slovaks here
A funeral Mass for Father Edward A. Slosarcik was offered by Bishop Timothy Lyne as main celebrant, at Alvernia Manor June 22. Father Slosarcik was in residence at Alvernia at the time of his death.
Father Slosarcik graduated from St. Simon the Apostle Grade School, Quigley Preparatory Seminary and Mundelein Seminary. He was ordained in 1950.
He held masters degrees in education and sociology. From 1966-75, he taught religion at Maria High School. He was professor of medical ethics at St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital from 1972-85, while pastor of St. John the Baptist Slovak Parish in Chicago.
He spent many years in the Slovak community. He was associate pastor at St. Simon’s from 1967-73 and at Immaculate Conception (S. Aberdeen) from 1973-77, before serving as pastor of St. John’s for 16 years until retirement in 1993.
Surviving is a niece, Cecilia Gaszak.

Sr. M. Humiliata Rykaczewski
Teacher
Felician Sister Mary Humiliata Rykaczewski, 85, died June 4. Born in Chicago, she entered the Felician Sisters in 1939 and professed her final vows in 1947. Sister Rykaczewski taught at schools in Illinois and Wisconsin. In the archdiocese, she taught at Holy Rosary from 1941-1944, St. John of God from 1947-1951, St. Hedwig in Niles from 1951-1960 and Good Counsel High School from 1966-1998. Sister Rykaczewski also enjoyed writing and was a published poet.

Sr. Connie Driscoll
Homeless shelter founder
Missionary Sister of the Poor Connie Driscoll, 71, died May 17 at her home in Chicago.
Born in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, she served with the U.S. Army in Germany for seven years before returning to America and running several businesses in Milwaukee and Colorado. Sister Connie came to Chicago in 1982 to visit a former teacher who was also a nun. In 1985 she joined the Missionary Sisters of the Poor.
Sister Connie opened the St. Martin de Porres House of Hope Shelter in the Woodlawn neighborhood in 1983. She and Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary Sister Therese O’Sullivan ran the shelter, which served women with substance abuse problems and their children, for 23 years. Together the pair adopted a girl 20 years ago, when a woman at the shelter decided to surrender her child.
Sister Connie is survived by her daughter, Molly Driscoll; a brother, three sisters and several nieces and nephews.

Sr. Mary Catherine Jordan
Educator
Dominican Sister Mary Catherine Jordan, formerly known as Sister John Bride Jordan, died June 10 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich., at the age of 75.
Born in Chicago, Sr. Jordan graduated from St. Casimir Academy and received a bachelor of arts in English and a masters in education from Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla.
She served as a teacher, principal and guidance counselor at schools in Florida and at Regina High School in Wilmette for one year (1981-2). She was Dean of Resident Students at Rosarian Academy from 1983 to 1990.
Sister is survived by two sisters, Eileen Cherney of Plainfield and Dorothy Pauly of Orland Park.

Sr. Virginia Petty
Educator
Sister of Providence Virginia Petty, 91, also known as Sister Mary Virginia, died June 8 in Edgewood, Ky. Born in Kentucky, Sister Virginia entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence in 1935, professed her first vows in 1938 and her final vows in 1944.
Sister Virginia taught mainly junior high grades for 50 years at schools in California, Illinois, Indiana and the District of Columbia. She taught for several years in the Chicago area at St. Andrew from 1943-44, St. Mel-Holy Ghost from 1944-45, Our Lady of Mercy from 1945-46, St. Genevieve from 1949-50, St. Joseph in Downers Grove from 1950-52 and Immaculate Conception in Norwood Park from 1952-56.
Sister Virginia returned to St. Mary-of-the-Woods in 1990. She is survived by her cousin Carmelite Mother Francis of Louisville, Ky.

Sr. Felicitas Farrell
Culinary artist
A funeral Mass for Dominican Sister Felicitas Farrell, 77, was offered June 9 at Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa, Wis. Born in Madison, Wis., she professed her first vows in 1949 and made her final profession in 1952.
Sr. Farrell was a culinary artist in Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Illinois, Wyoming and Alaska. She also did clerical and volunteer work at Immaculate Conception School in Fairbanks, Alaska, from 1977 to 2005. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sr. Felicitas ministered in the culinary arts at St. Sabina from 1957-1963; St. Thomas the Apostle from 1965-1967; and Trinity Convent in River Forest from 1968-1977.
Sr. Farrell is survived by three sisters and several nieces and nephews.

Sr. Margaret Pernsteiner
teacher
School Sister of St. Francis Margaret Pernsteiner (Thomasette), 99, died June 5 at St. Joseph Convent in Campbellsport, Wis.
She was born in Medford, Wis., and was received into the School Sisters of St. Francis community in 1933. She made profession of vows Aug. 13, 1935.
Sister Margaret lived her religious ministry in education in Illinois and Wisconsin. In the Archdiocese of Chicago she taught at St. William School, 1944-48, and Holy Angels School, 1962-63.
Sister Margaret is survived by three brothers and two sisters.

Sister Patrice McGlone
educator
School Sister of St. Francis Patrice McGlone died June 11 at St. Joseph Convent in Campbellsport, Wis. She was born in England in 1911 and was received into the School Sisters of St. Francis community June 15, 1927 and made profession of vows Aug. 13, 1929.
Sister Patrice lived her religious ministry in education and in leadership, serving in in Illinois, Wisconsin, Mississippi and Nebraska. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Martin School, 1928-1942. In addition, she was provincial for the School Sisters of St. Francis Our Lady of the Angels Province in Omaha, 1961-67. After retirement, she offered volunteer support services at St. Joseph Convent in Campbellsport, Wis.

Sr. Francia Shannon

Sinsinawa Dominican Sister Francia Shannon, 95, died May 20 at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green.
Sister Francia made her first religious profession in 1939 and her final profession in 1942. She served in several states as a high school history teacher for 49 years.
In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught history at Trinity High School, River Forest, 1939-43 and 1967-88, and at Queen of Peace High School, Oak Lawn, 1964-67.
From 1988-99, she lived at Trinity Convent, River Forest, and later at St. Dominic Villa in Dubuque and Hazel Green.

Sr. Claudia Lewis
Educator
A funeral mass for Sister of Provi
dence Claudia Lewis, 97, was offered May 25 at the church of the Immaculate Conception in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind.
Sister Claudia, formerly Mary Margaret Lewis, was born in Chicago and entered the Sisters of Providence in 1925. She professed her final vows in 1934.
Sister Claudia taught elementary and junior high school in Indiana, Illinois, Massachusetts, California and Texas. She returned to St. Mary-of-the-Woods in 1983 where she ministered in several areas.

Sr. Conleth Hager
Music teacher
Franciscan Sister Conleth Hager, 89, died June 7. Born Henrietta Hager in Kellogg, Minn., she made her vows as a Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, in 1937. She earned a bachelor of arts in music and a masters in music from DePaul University. She taught organ, piano and choir and ran music programs at schools in Chicago and the Midwest.
Sister Conleth became a representative for Winston Press, giving music demonstrations in Chicago.
