Fidel Rojas

Father of priest

Fidel Rojas, the father of Father Alberto Rojas, died May 27 in Mexico. He was 90. Rojas is the associate dean of formation and the director of Hispanic ministry at Mundelein Seminary.

Sr. Rita Connolly

Educator

Daughter of Charity Sister Rita (Rita Mary) Connolly, 92, died March 19 at Seton Residence in Evansville, Ind. Born in Chicago, she graduated from St. Patrick’s High School, and entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Fontbonne College, St. Louis, and a master’s degree in history from DePaul University.

Sister Rita served as a teacher in Chicago; New Orleans; LaSalle, Ill.; San Francisco; Dallas; St. Louis; and Puerto Rico.

Sr. Francelia McGrath

Musician, organist

School Sister of St. Francis Francelia McGrath died March 26 at St. Joseph Convent, Campbellsport, Wis. Born in Racine, Wis., she entered the School Sisters of St. Francis in 1938.

She served as a musician and organist at schools in Illinois and Wisconsin. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she served as chorus organist at Alvernia High School (1959-60) and at St. Benedict High School (1960-63).

Sr. Marie Catherine Norton

Educator, principal

Dominican Sister Marie Catherine Norton, 90, died March 12 at St. Dominic Villa, Sinsinawa, Wis. Born in Chicago, she joined the Sinsinawa Dominicans in 1935. She served as an elementary and junior high teacher and principal at schools in Illinois, Wisconsin, New York, Minnesota and Iowa.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Richard (1970-73), and was the computer instructor at St. Mary of the Woods (1986-92). She also served as an associate professor of education at Edgewood College.

Sr. Mary Rosaria Janik

Educator

Felician Sister Mary Rosaria Janik, 94, died March 1 at Our Lady of the Angels Convent, Chicago. A Chicago native, she entered the Felician Sisters in 1929 and served as an educator for 60 years at schools in Wisconsin, California and Illinois. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Joseph Elementary School (1938-44), St. Mary Magdalen (1944-48), St. Joseph High School (1955-60), Good Counsel High School (1960-69) and Felician College (1969-91).

Sr. Elizabeth Marie Ruddle

Educator

Felician Sister Elizabeth Marie Ruddle, 49, died Feb. 27 at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Convent, Manitowoc, Wis. She served as an elementary school teacher and principal.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Elizabeth Marie served at Our Lady of the Gardens (1979-81 and 1982-86), Good Shepherd (1981-82 and 1992-94), St. Wenceslaus (1986-88), Holy Innocents (1989-90), St. Bruno (1990-91), and Assumption B.V.M./St. Catherine of Genoa (1994-96).

Sr. Mary Adelma Strojek

Educator

Felician Sister Mary Adelma Strojek, 89, died Feb. 28 at Our Lady of the Angels Convent in Chicago. A Chicago native, she entered the Felician Sisters congregation in 1935 and served as a grade school teacher for 50 years in Alabama, Wisconsin and Illinois. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at Sts. Peter and Paul (1954-55) and Our Lady of the Gardens (1970-83).

Sr. Remi Smutnak

Educator, administrator

Benedictine Sister Remi (Remigia) Smutnak, 92, died March 16. She was born and raised in Sts. Cyril and Methodius Parish, Joliet and entered the Benedictines in 1931. Sister Remi graduated from DePaul University and ministered in Illinois, Texas, Wisconsin and California. She served as a teacher, administrator, community supervisor and director of religious education. After retirement, she volunteered at Edward Hospital in Naperville and received an award for her service.

Sr. Rose Marie Garvey

Educator

Providence Sister Rose Marie (Mary Bridget) Garvey, 87, died March 16 at Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary of the Woods, Ind. Sister Rose Marie was born in Chicago and entered the Sisters of Providence in 1937.

She taught at junior high and high schools in Indiana, Illinois and Massachusetts. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at Marywood in Evanston (1940-45), St. Columbkille High School (1957-63), and Providence High School (1963-66).

Marie Scotese Cloud

Dedicated Volunteer

A memorial Mass for Marie Scotese Cloud, 84, was held May 20 at St. John Brebeuf Church, Niles. Mrs. Cloud volunteered for GLADD (Giving Love Apostolate of the Developmentally Disabled) for 17 years. She was a retired administrative assistant and long time resident of Niles.

Mrs. Cloud was preceded in death by her husband Edward. She is survived by a brother, sister, stepdaughter, several nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren.

Sr. Angela Rose Halpin

Educator and Principal

Providence Sister Angela Rose (Winifred Mary) Halpin, 94, died March 12 at Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary of the Woods, Ind. Born in Chicago, she entered the Sisters of Providence in 1929. She served as a teacher and principal at schools in Indiana, Illinois, North Carolina and the District of Columbia.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Mark (1963-67) and Immaculate Conception in Norwood Park (1971-72). She was principal at St. Andrew (1961-63) and St. Columbkille (1967-71).

She also served as a parish minister at St. Paul of the Cross in Park Ridge (1978-85), was coordinator for the Experimental Retirement Facility at St. Angela (1972-76), the coordinator for facilities at St. Joseph Province Center in Park Ridge (1978-85), and the scheduling office assistant at Mother Theodore Guerin High School in River Grove (1986-87).

Sr. Cecilia Hudec

Educator

School Sister of St. Francis Cecilia Hudec, 84, died April 21 at St. Joseph Convent in Campbellsport, Wis. Born in Kriva, Czechoslovakia, she entered the School Sisters of St. Francis in 1940. Sister Cecilia served at schools and convents in Illinois, Nebraska and Wisconsin. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she served at St. Priscilla (1992-2004). She ministered as a substitute teacher, driver, tutor, in financial services and in the accounting department.

Sr. Helen T. Garvey

Educator, secretary

BVM Sister Helen (Hilary) T. Garvey, 80, died April 22 at Marian Hall, Dubuque, Iowa.

She was born in Oak Park and graduated from St. Charles Borromeo School and St. Mary High School. She entered the BVM congregation in 1943.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Mary High School (1959-69) and Little Flower High School (1969-71). She also served as a secretary for the American Library Association, the Commission on Hospital Accreditation and Mundelein College.

Sr. Clare Dichtl

Homemaker

School Sister of St. Francis Clare Dichtl (Erasma) died March 31 at Sacred Heart Convent, Milwaukee.

Born in Bavaria, she entered the School Sisters of St. Francis in 1927 in Germany and made profession of vows in 1929. She was a homemaker in Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska. She was a homemaker at Alvernia High School Convent (1935-37), Blessed Agnes Convent (1937-40), and Our Lady of Victory (1940-41).

Sr. Elise Boudreaux

Nurse, Provincial Superior

Daughter of Charity Sister Elise Boudreaux, 86, died April 6 at Seton Residence, Evansville, Ind. Born and raised in Louisiana, she entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis in 1941. Her first assignment as a student nurse was at St. Joseph Hospital, Chicago. She received her R.N. at St. Joseph School of Nursing and a bachelor’s degree from DePaul University. She served as a nursing supervisor in Indiana and Texas. In 1969, Sister Elise was named Provincial Superior of the newly formed East Central Province. The offices were located in Chicago, but moved to Evansville, Ind. in 1971. Sister Elise continued to serve in many roles at hospitals throughout the country and returned to Seton Residence in Evansville in 2005.

Sr. Mary Elizabeth Lalley

Educator

Dominican Sister Mary Elizabeth Lalley, 90, died March 31 at St. Dominic Villa, Sinsinawa, Wis. The Amboy, Ill., native entered the Sinsinawa Dominicans in 1934.

She was an elementary school teacher for 36 years and was support staff for the community for 12 years. She served in Washington, D.C., Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota and Iowa. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Mary Elizabeth taught at Epiphany School (1956-60) and was support staff at St. Basil School (1970-71 and 1972-74).

Sr. Adele Goeken

Educator, nurse’s aide

School Sister of St. Francis Adele Goeken (Corintha), 93, died April 4 at St. Joseph Convent, Campbellsport, Wis. Born in Nebraska, she entered the School Sisters of St. Francis in 1934. She served as a teacher and nurse’s aide in Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Nevada, Minnesota and Nebraska.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Matthias School (1935-45), St. Anne School in Barrington (1945-53), and St. Cyprian School in River Grove (1953-61).

Catherine H. Sullivan

Volunteer

Catherine “Kay” H. Sullivan, 88, a native of Chicago, died April 13. Mrs. Sullivan graduated from St. Patrick Academy and Siena High School on the West Side.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in home economics from Mundelein College in 1938. She married George Penman Sullivan in 1942.

In 1980, Mrs. Sullivan founded an antique cookbook sales and search business. She was a volunteer at Regina Dominican High School, Loyola Academy, Mundelein College, Big Sisters, St. Raymond Parish in Mt. Prospect and Sts. Faith, Hope and Charity Parish, Winnetka.

The Sullivans created an award at Loyola and Regina for a senior who demonstrated commitment to the poor, and also created a fund at Regina Dominican in honor of their deceased daughter, Kathleen Correa.

Mrs. Sullivan is survived by her husband of 64 years; her children George Jr., Maripat Higgins, and Daniel; and nine grandchildren.

Fr. Robert C. Foster

Educator, counselor

Viatorian Father Robert C. Foster, 74, died April 25 in Henderson, Nev. Born in Chicago, He professed first vows as a Viatorian in 1952. He was ordained in Joliet, Ill., in 1960.

A graduate of Fenwick High School, Oak Park, he earned degrees from Loyola University Chicago, Bradley University and Loyola University (Baltimore).

He was a teacher, counselor, school administrator, pastor and chaplain at institutions in Illinois, Nevada, California and Arizona. In Chicago, he taught religion and was a counselor at St. Benedict High School from 1960-61.

Sr. Mary Elisabeth Rich

Educator, librarian

Mercy Sister Mary Elisabeth Rich, 96, died April 16 at McAuley Convent in Chicago. She had been a Sister of Mercy for 69 years.

The Grand, Rapids, Mich., native taught in Chicago at Little Flower, St. Gabriel, St. Cecilia and St. Xavier Academy.

She also was a librarian at St. Xavier College and Mother McAuley High School.

She retired in 1988 and most recently resided at Mercy Convent in Chicago.
