Arch, NDHS form partnership
Archdiocesan representatives and members of the board of Notre Dame High School for Boys agreed July 12 to discuss new models for governance of the all male, college preparatory school.
The Niles school was threatened with closure after the 2006-07 academic year when the Priests of Holy Cross, Indiana Province, announced plans to withdraw sponsorship.
“The Archdiocese intends to form a partnership with the lay board of Notre Dame to lead the school going forward,” said Auxiliary Bishop Francis J. Kane. “We will work with the Holy Cross fathers to ensure that the leadership transition is completed in a seamless manner and as rapidly as possible.”
“We look at Notre Dame as a model for the future of Catholic secondary schools,” said archdiocesan Catholic schools superintendent Nicholas M. Wolsonovich.
Additional meets will be held this summer to draft a proposal to the Holy Cross Congregation. In the meantime, the board assured students and parents that Notre Dame’s programs, mission, curriculum, extracurricular activities or athletic programs remain in place.
“The spirit of Notre Dame is the alumni, families and young men,” said board chairman Joseph Gurdak. “We are pleased that the Archdiocese of Chicago has recognized the excellence of our present academic accomplishments and the promise of our future by joining with us in this transition.”
