Parish Pride

St. Michael Church
14327 Highland Ave., Orland Park

This huge parish of amazing grace was founded right after the Civil War. The first pastor rode horseback to his handful of Luxembourg farmers. Today he is assisted by 600-700 lay ministers for the near-100 various ministries, reaching out to a mix of almost 5,000 parish families.

Parishioners also use their gifts in service to one another, a credit to immersion in Christ Renews His Parish, an evangelization tool. A strong family commitment and sense of parish identity is considered the fruit of many residents’ “South Side” religious roots.

The present edifice, designed by John Bartolomeo in 1965, was reconfigured and enhanced in 1985 by architect Paul Straka, now seating 950. Modern slab glass windows by Dolores Veth of Jacobi Studios in St. Louis and distinctive sculptures in metal and stone enhance the sacred space inside and out.

A spectacular pipe organ, six voice choirs and a handbell choir make it a joy for worshippers to “pray twice” here.
