The Interview: Jorge Rivera The archdiocese will hold its second “Encuentro Católico Juvenil” Sept. 6 to celebrate the strides Hispanic young adult ministry has made since the first encuentro three years ago—including the establishment of Rivera’s office—and work on ways to make young adults missionaries to their peers.

Parish Pride: This is a parish of “firsts”: The first church founded and dedicated here by then-Archbishop John Cody, and maybe the first on the globe so named at the close of Vatican II, when Pope Paul VI put the world into Mary’s hands under this title.

Parish closings: A year later
Despite the pain, many still find a welcome
The Sunday after St. Gelasius Parish closed last summer, nearby St. Thomas the Apostle Parish opened its doors and its arms to the parishioners.
Only a little over a mile away and led by the same pastor, it seemed a good fit for many of the roughly 120 Catholics who worshipped at St. Gelasius most weeks.
