Fr. Edmund Schreiber

Hazel Crest pastor

Father Edmund J. Schreiber, 84, a Chicago native and retired pastor of St. Anne Parish in Hazel Crest, died July 7, at Holy Family Medical Center in Des Plaines. He had been a priest in the archdiocese for 59 years.

Father Schreiber attended St. Henry School on the North Side and graduated from Quigley Preparatory Seminary and the University of St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein. He was ordained by Cardinal Samuel Stritch in 1944 and began his ministry that year at S.S. Peter and Paul Parish on the South Side.

He served for four years as assistant pastor at St. Peter Parish in Skokie and was assistant pastor of St. Bernardine Parish, Forest Park for 16 years beginning in 1950. From 1966-69 he served as assistant pastor at Our Lady of the Wayside in Arlington Heights. In 1969, he was named pastor of St. Anne Parish in Hazel Crest, where he served for 15 years. He was associate pastor at St. George in Tinley Park between 1984 and 1989 and retired from active ministry in 1989.

Sr. Hilda Gelegan

Adrian Dominican Sister Hilda Marie (Veronica Margaret) Gelegan, 87, died July 6. A native of London, Ontario, she was in the 72nd year of her religious life. She spent 53 years ministering in education in several states.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Joseph, Homewood, from 1929-30; St. Matthew, Chicago, from 1931-32; and at St. Lawrence, from 1937-48 as a teacher, and from 1948-54 as principal.

Br. Bruce Jendraszak

Province treasurer

Augustinian Brother Bruce Jendraszak, 54, died July 6. He served as Midwest province treasurer of the order since 1991.

He entered the novitiate in 1966 and professed his permanent vows in 1972. He was assigned to Tolentine Center, Olympia Fields, where he established and operated AP Press, which did printing for the Augustinians and other religious groups. In 1983, he was named manager of Tolentine Center, a post he held until 2002. He was also prior of his Austin Friary community from 1983-91 and again from 1999 until his death.

Sr. Dolores Lynch

Teacher

Sinsinawa Dominican Dolores Lynch, 63, died July 3. Born in Kansas City, Mo., she made her final profession in 1965. She served as an elementary teacher and then worked in social services. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she was principal at St. Thomas the Apostle High School, 1971-72. She worked in social services at Misericordia Home North from 1972-76 and in social service and teaching English as a Second Language at Epiphany Parish from 1977-79.

She also served as pastoral associate at Epiphany from 1979-83. From 1983-90, she served at City College of Chicago in a variety of capacities, including as an administrator, English teacher for Spanish-speaking students, GED teacher and secretary.

Fr. John Cain

Pastor, educator

Father John C. Cain, 70, who served as a pastor, educator and chaplain, died July 2 after a long hospitalization.

Following his ordination in 1958, he served as assistant pastor at St. Edward Parish on the Northwest Side. In 1960, he was appointed to the faculty at Quigley Seminary. He also served as assistant pastor at St. Justin Martyr and Our Lady of Peace parishes before being assigned in 1971 as chaplain at Queen of Peace High School in Burbank.

In 1978, Father Cain returned to Quigley Seminary, where he served until 1981, when he was named pastor at St. James Parish, Sauk Village. In 1993, he was named pastor at St. Rosalie Parish, Harwood Heights, until his retirement in late 2002. He was named pastor emeritus of St. Rosalie in January 2003.

Sr. M. Irene Lickteig

Sister of St. Francis Mary Irene Lickteig, 93, died July 1. Born in Greeley, Kan., she entered the congregation of the Sisters of St. Francis at Mount St. Clare Convent, Clinton, Ia., in 1935. She made her final profession of vows in 1940. She spent her 50 years of active ministry teaching elementary education. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she served at St. Francis de Paula, from 1938-55 and at St. Gerald School, Oak Lawn, from 1967-85.

Sr. Helen Clare Ryan

BVM Sister of Charity Helen Clare Ryan, 103, died June 29. Born in Dubuque, Iowa, she entered the BVMs in 1918 and was professed in 1924. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at Mary Queen of Heaven, Cicero, from 1921-24; St. Callistus, 1934-36; St. Gertrude, 1943-46; and Holy Cross, 1946-52. In retirement, she volunteered at St. Gertrude Parish and St. Eulalia in Maywood. She was a member of the Sisters of Charity for 85 years.

Sr. M. Beatrice Dempsey

Sister of Providence Mary Beatrice Dempsey, 72, died June 30. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she entered the Sisters of Providence in 1949 and was professed in 1957. She taught in schools in several states including the Archdiocese of Chicago, at Our Lady of Sorrows from 1952-54.

Sr. M. Adelle Kellogg

Sister of Christian Charity M. Adelle Kellogg died June 22 at age 88. Her ministry was in the field of education.

For more than 55 years she taught various grades or served as a school principal. She taught at St. Raphael School in Chicago from 1942-46.

Sr. M. Virginitas Piorkowski

Teacher/lab technician

Felician Sister Mary Virginitas Piorkowski died June 3 at age 88. A Chicago native, she entered the Felician Sisters in 1932 and was professed in 1940. She taught in several states and also ministered as a laboratory technician.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Wenceslaus from 1934-1942 and 1963-1965; Holy Innocents, 1945-1946 and 1966-1968; St. Turibius, 1965-1966; Holy Rosary, North Chicago, 1968-1970; Our Lady of Ransom, Niles, 1970-1971; St. Damian, Oak Forest, 1971-1973. She ministered to the elderly at St. Andrew Home in Niles as a librarian and floor supervisor from 1973-94.

Sr. Felicia Earnest

BVM Sister of Charity Felicia Earnest, 88, died July 7. A Chicago native, she entered the novitiate in 1934 and was professed in 1942. She taught at St. Odilo, Berwyn, in 1937 and St. Mary High School, Chicago, from 1957-73. She also worked for the Illinois State Department of Children and Family Services from 1973-86.
