Sr. Robert Joseph Bailey

Adrian Dominican Sister Robert Joseph (Margaret H.) Bailey, 80, died May 29. She was in the 63rd year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation. A native of Detroit, Mich., she spent 36 years ministering in education in states from Ohio to Arizona. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Celestine, Elmwood Park, from 1941-43. She was an administrator in a Nevada hospital from 1963-83.

Sr. Dennis Bochenek

Educator

Resurrection Sister Dennis Bochenek, 88, died May 26. A native of Chicago, she entered the congregation in 1938 and taught in several states. In the Chicago area, she taught at St. Mary of the Angels, St. Thecla and St. Casimir. After 42 years of teaching, she served at Resurrection Medical Center as a clerical assistant to the administration and as sacristan in the chapel.

Sr. K. Therese Hart

Educator

BVM Sister K. Therese (John Stephen) Hart, 73, died May 25. A native of Davenport, Iowa, she professed her final vows in 1959. She served as a teacher in Illinois and Iowa. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Ferdinand School, 1954; Immaculata High School, 1969-73; Holy Name Cathedral High School, 1973-94; and St. Benedict High School, 1994-2001.

Sr. Marie Freeder

Educator

Sister of Providence Marie (James Therese) Freeder, 91, died May 25. Born in Omaha, Neb., she entered the Sisters of Providence in 1930 and professed her final vows in 1938. She taught music in schools staffed by the Sisters of Providence in several states. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Athanasius, Evanston, from 1935-40 and 1944-48; and Immaculate Conception, Norwood Park, from 1959-68.

Sr. Paulita Borelli

Teacher

Sister of Christian Charity Paulita Borelli, 70, died May 19. Born in Highwood, Ill., she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Christian Charity in 1949. She taught in schools in several states. In Chicago, she taught kindergarten at St. Aloysius School in 1951. She later taught at St. Mary School, Riverside. In 1970, she began her ministry as a cook, first at Sacred Heart Convent in Wilmette, and then served in other states.

Gregory Morrow

Pro-life activist

Gregory Morrow, 83, died May 18 after a long illness. An Army veteran of World War II and a longtime resident of Chicago’s South Side, he was committed to pro-life and pro-family issues. Morrow also was a historian and wrote for The Wanderer newspaper. He is survived by his wife, Eileen, and was father to six children: Gregory, Dennis, Mary, Edward, David and the late Terrence. His funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Thomas More Church.

Sr. Martha Joan Sempolski

Former superior general

Franciscan Sister of Chicago Martha Joan Sempolski, 86, died May 18. Born in Kent, Ohio, she left her family at the age of 15 and moved to Chicago to enter the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago. She made her perpetual profession of vows in 1938. She ministered in education for 10 years, teaching elementary school in several states. In Chicago, she taught at Five Holy Martyrs. She later studied dietetics at Mundelein College, where she earned a degree in nutrition. She then served for the next 24 years at St. John Hospital in South Dakota. She was named Superior General of the congregation in 1978. She oversaw the revision of the constitutions and directory of the congregation.

Sr. Kevin Cafferty

Ministered in food service

Sister of Providence Kevin (Katherine Agnes) Cafferty, 89, died May 17. A native of Ireland, she entered the Sisters of Providence in 1941 and professed her final vows in 1950. She ministered in convents and schools staffed by the Sisters of Providence in several states. She served as a cook or in food service for 34 years. She also ministered to the elderly. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she ministered at Marywood, Evanston, from 1948-49; St. Sylvester, Chicago, from 1952-53; and at Providence, Chicago, from 1963-65.

Br. Hilary Gilmartin

Teacher/administrator

De La Salle Christian Brother Hilary Gilmartin, 84, died May 12 at his residence in Westmont, Ill.

Born Joseph Theodore Anthony Gilmartin in Chicago, he was baptized at St. Theodore Parish and educated at St. Ailbe and De La Salle Institute before entering the Christian Brothers in Glencoe, Missouri. He taught and was an administrator at colleges and universities throughout the Midwest and Canada. In Chicago, he taught at St. Mel High School in the early 1950’s. He was associated with Lewis University and the Christian Brothers Conference as an editor from the 1970’s until his death.
