Cardinal Aurelio Sabattani

Italian Cardinal Aurelio Sabattani, 90, an expert in legal affairs during a long career at the Vatican, died in Rome. Following the cardinals April 19 death, Pope John Paul II praised his valuable contributions to ecclesial jurisprudence.
The pope was to celebrate the funeral Mass for Cardinal Sabattani April 24 in St. Peters Basilica. His death leaves the College of Cardinals with 168 members, of whom 112 are under age 80 and eligible to vote in a conclave. Cardinal Sabattani had lived in Vatican City since his retirement as a Vatican official in 1991.

Adrian Dominican Sister Virginia (William Francis) Cushing, 84, died April 20. She was in the 52nd year of religious profession in the Adrian Dominican congregation. A native of Detroit, she served in various ministries in several states. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Celestine in Elmwood Park from 1951-55.

Adrian Dominican Sister Mary Ann (Richard Francis) Breidenich, 64, died April 18. She was in her 47th year of religious profession in the Adrian Dominican congregation. She spent 45 years ministering in several states. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Philip Neri from 1957-62; at St. James, Maywood, from 1962-64; and at Queen of Angels from 1964-65.

Sister of Charity BVM Therese Norine Solon, 90, died April 14. A Chicago native, she entered the Sisters of Charity in 1932 and ministered in education in several states. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at Immaculata High School from 1942-55, and at St. Mary High School from 1961-66. She also served as social counselor to the aged at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish from 1973-77.

Adrian Dominican Sister Virgiline Anne (Catherine Philip) Faeth, 96, died April 13. A native of New Bavaria, Ohio, she spent 57 years ministering in education in several states. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she ministered at Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette, from 1978-88 as an academic advisor, and from 1988-96 as a volunteer.
Joan Gill
Transplant recipient
Joan Gill, 74, of Orland Park, and Maitland, Fla., died April 8. A Chicago native, she was an active member of St. Michael Parish, Orland Park. She had also been a member of Most Holy Redeemer Parish in Evergreen Park for 34 years. After receiving a kidney transplant in 1988, she shared her story at churches and schools in Illinois and Florida. She assisted with the Gift of Life organ donor program in Illinois and co-founded the Central Florida Friends of the Polycystic Kidney Research Foundation. She is survived by her husband, John, and three daughters.

Sinsinawa Dominican Sister Helen (Fidele) Kelly, 89, died April 5. She made her final profession of vows in 1936 and ministered as an elementary and high school teacher for 24 years and as a library aide for 10 years. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Giles, Oak Park, from 1948-50; Trinity High School, River Forest, from 1951-53; St. Thomas the Apostle High School, Chicago, from 1954-55; and at St. Luke School in River Forest from 1955-57.

Felician Sister Mary Laurentine (Helen) Zygmuntowicz, 83, died March 28. A native of Chicago, she entered the Felician Sisters congregation in 1939. She spent nine years in the field of education before working as director of medical records in health care institutions. While working as an educator, she ministered in Chicago at SS. Peter and Paul, 1942-47; St. Mary Magdalen, 1949-50; and at St. James, 1954-55.
