Sr. Margaret Drexler

Educator

Adrian Dominican Sister Margaret Loretto Drexler died April 8 at age 100. She was in the 78th year of her religious profession. A native of Freeport, Ill., she spent 59 years ministering in education in several states. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught music at Queen of Angels School in Chicago from 1942-45.

Sr. Mary Kevin Harte

Ministered to Sisters

Sister of Providence Mary Kevin Harte, 90, died April 1. She ministered in convents and schools where the Sisters of Providence lived and worked.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she served at Mother Theodore Guerin Convent in River Grove from 1996-2001.

Sr. Mary Maurita Wszolek

Teacher

Franciscan Sister of Chicago Mary Maurita Wszolek, 87, died March 31. She made her perpetual profession of vows in 1937 and ministered for 64 years in education.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago she taught at Five Holy Martyrs School, St. Pancratius School, and St. Florian School, where she also served as assistant principal.

Sr. Elizabeth Nowak

Teacher/librarian

Sister of St. Joseph Elizabeth Nowak died March 28. She spent 52 years as a religious community member in the field of education.

She was a teacher in several schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago and also served as librarian at Lourdes High School.

Sr. Ethel Cecelia Vaca

Teacher, principal

Sister of St. Joseph Ethel Cecelia Vaca, 75, died March 26. A Sister of St. Joseph for 56 years, she served as a teacher in several states.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she served at St. Barbara, Brookfield; St. Hugh, Lyons; Assumption School; Nazareth Academy, LaGrange Park.

She served as superior at Mt. Carmel, Melrose Park. At Nazareth Academy, she also served as principal and director of development.

Sr. Marcelle Bayerl

Teacher, homemaker

School Sister of St. Francis Marcelle Bayerl, 90, died March 23. She made her profession of vows in 1937 and lived her religious ministry as a teacher and homemaker. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she was a homemaker at Immaculate Conception Convent from 1936-37. She also served as homemaker and teacher at Our Lady of Victory Convent/School from 1942-54.

Fr. Raymond Kunkel

Educator

Divine Word Missionary Father Raymond Kunkel, 84, died March 26. Born in Ireland, Ind. and raised in Jasper, he was ordained in 1945, he served as a missionary in the Philippines and Japan.

He taught in Divine Word colleges in the Philippines and at the Divine Word-administered Nanzan University in Nagoya, Japan.

Upon his return to the U.S. in 1983, he served as retreat director and sacristan at Divine Word International until 1990, and as rector of the Divine Word Techny community from 1990-93.

From 1993-98, he served as chaplain to the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters of Perpetual Adoration.

Father Kunkel is survived by his niece, Patti Henek of River Forest.

Sr. Bernardine Swygman

Sister of Providence Marie Bernardine Swygman, 97, died March 20. She professed her final vows in 1930 and taught in schools staffed by the Sisters of Providence in several states.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Leo, Chicago; Marywood, Evanston; St. Angela, Chicago; and St. Mel-Holy Ghost, Chicago.

Sr. Ruth Pfuntner

Medical technology

Holy Spirit Missionary Sister Ruth Pfuntner, 86, died March 16. She was a Holy Spirit Missionary Sister for 67 years.

She served in the medical technology field at St. Therese hospital, Waukegan, for more than 30 years.

Sr. Leonarda Zabek

educator

Sister of St. Joseph Leonarda Zabek died March 9. She was a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph for 64 years and worked in education.

She was principal at St. Mary of Perpetual Help School and taught in various other schools.
