Cardinal George, a member of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, marks his 40th jubilee as a priest this year. He was ordained Dec. 21, 1963, at St. Pascal Church, Chicago, his boyhood parish. As a priest, he served as provincial superior of the Oblates midwestern province 1973-74, vicar general of the order 1974-86. He was named bishop of Yakima (Washington) in 1990, archbishop of Portland (Oregon) in 1996 and became the eighth archbishop of Chicago in April 1997. He was named by Pope John Paul II to the College of Cardinals Jan. 18, 1998.
