St. William Church
2600 N. Sayre Ave.
This modern, street-level edifice designed by Belli & Belli, dedicated in 1960, is the third church built since the parish was established. Along with fine mosaics, its windows of slab stained glass were created in over 44 radiant colors by the Conrad Schmidt Studio of Wisconsin.
Serving the far Northwest side and part of Elmwood Park, its plant occupies the four corners of Wrightwood and Sayre avenues.
Originally a German/English-speaking parish, the church now serves Italians, other Euro-Americans, Hispanics and new Polish arrivals.
Traditionally in August there is an outdoor procession honoring St. Rocco, whose statue is enshrined in the church and in December a novena pays tribute to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Cultural diversity has helped develop St. Williams homey and welcoming characteristics.
Besides a parish food pantry, St. Vincent de Paul Society, and SPRED program for persons with developmental disabilities, its former convent is now the site of Amate House for young adult volunteers in the archdiocese.
