Sr. M. Simon Glowacki

Served for 74 years

Franciscan Sister of Chicago Mary Simon Glowacki died Dec. 21 at age 89. She joined the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago at age 15 in 1928 and made her perpetual profession of vows in 1934. She served the community for more than 74 years. She served at St. Elizabeth Day Nursery and Guardian Angel Day Care in Chicago and ministered to the sisters at St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr Convent in Chicago. She served in Ohio and Nebraska before returning to serve as a nurse’s aide at St. Joseph Home in Chicago and at Mother Theresa Home in Lemont. She was known for making porcelain dolls that were sold in the gift shop or given as special gifts.

Fr. Thomas Curley

Pro-life priest for 63 years

Father Thomas Curley, a retired priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago and pastor emeritus of Transfiguration Parish in Wauconda, died Dec. 20 at age 88.

A Chicago native, Father Curley attended Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary and graduated from the University of St. Mary of the Lake. He was ordained by Cardinal Mundelein in 1939 and was assigned to Christ the King Parish on the city’s southwest side. After six years there, he served as an associate pastor at St. Ambrose (1945-48), St. Ferdinand (1948-55), St. Paul of the Cross in Park Ridge (1955-61), and Our Lady of Knock in Calumet City (1961-66).

In 1966, Father Curley was made pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, on May Street, which is now closed. He served for six years as pastor of Transfiguration in Wauconda beginning in 1970 and retired in 1976, livng for a time in Tuscon, Arizona, where he was active in the Tucson diocese.

Father Curley also served as a counselor for the Rachel Project in ministering to women who had an abortion. He was a member of Priests for Life and served on the board of Women Exploited by Abortion.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Dec. 28 at St. Thomas More Church in Chicago where he resided in recent years.

Sr. Dorothy Trauscht

Educator for 60 years

Dominican Sister Dorothy Trauscht died Nov. 26 at age 91. She was an elementary teacher and tutor for 60 years. She taught in schools in several states. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Luke School in River Forest and St. Thomas More School in Chicago.

Sr. M. Clara Mikolajczyk

Educator

Felician Sister Mary Clara Mikolajczyk died Dec. 11 at age 102. Born in Chicago, she joined the Felician Sisters from St. Mary of the Angels Parish in Chicago in 1919 and began a ministry in education that spanned 62 years. Her teaching assignments in the Archdiocese of Chicago included: St. Mary Magdalen, St. James, St. Helen, St. Bronislava, St. John of God, St. Bruno, Holy Rosary (North Chicago), St. Joseph, and St. Wenceslaus.

Sr. Yvonne Rowley

School Sister of St. Francis Yvonne Rowley died Dec. 15 at age 85. She was received into the School Sisters of St. Francis in 1935 and made her profession of vows in 1937. She lived her religious ministry in education, teaching for 43 years in three states. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Anne in Barrington, St. Joseph in Summit and Alvernia High School in Chicago. She is survived by her sister, School Sister of St. Francis Olive Rowley, of Bolingbrook.

Sr. Denise Kavanagh

Teacher

School Sister of St. Francis Denise Kavanagh died Dec. 11 at age 65. She was received into the School Sisters of St. Francis in 1955 and made her profession of vows in 1957. She began her ministry in education, teaching in Wisconsin and Illinois. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Peter in Skokie and Alvernia High School in Chicago. She also served as principal at St. Benedict Grade School in Chicago.
