Immaculate Heart of Mary
3817 N. Christiana Ave., Chicago
Not many churches have a gigantic rosary painted on the ceiling. Immaculate Heart of Mary does.
Established in 1912 to serve Polish families in the Irving Park area, the present church, designed by Pirola and Erbach and built in 1957, is the third edifice IHM parishioners have used for worship.
Newly renovated and air-conditioned, the church has an impressive cross of Jesus, the High Priest, presiding over the sanctuary. Stained-glass windows throughout the church illustrate Divine Grace active in the life of Mary and church history.
This parish has grown to include a representation from most of the world and Mass is celebrated in English, Spanish and Polish, as well as in the Knanite Syro-Malabar Rite.
The parish will proudly mark its 90th year of sharing the Gospel message with others at a 10 a.m. Mass on Oct. 27 with Bishop Thad Jakubowski officiating.
