Br. Clement Meyer
Worked at Missionary Press
Divine Word Missionary Brother Clement Meyer died Sept. 28. He professed his vows with the Society of the Divine Word in Techny in 1934 and worked as a linotype operator in the Techny Mission Press until it was destroyed by a fire in 1960. Br. Meyer’s family of eight siblings included five who served the church as priests or religious.

Fr. Julius Walz
Served in Fargo, N.D.
Father Julius Walz died Sept. 14 at age 94. A native of Chicago, Father Walz began his seminary studies at age 30.
Father Walz was ordained for the Diocese of Fargo, North Dakota. After serving in Fargo for 33 years, he returned to Chicago and regularly assisted at several archdiocesan parishes, including Immaculate Conception (Aberdeen), St. Bridget, St. David, Nativity of Our Lord, and St. Barbara.
Sr. Mary Regina McDermott
Social worker
Sister of Providence Mary Regina (Loretta Anne) McDermott died Sept. 21 at age 87. A native of Chicago, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence in 1933 and professed her final vows in 1941. She taught in schools in Indiana and Illinois. She spent nearly 20 years of ministry in counseling and social work.

Fr. Walter Hafner
Teacher, recruiter
Divine Word Missionary Father Walter Hafner died Sept. 19 at age 92. Following his ordination in 1937, he taught at several Divine Word high school seminaries. He was then sent to do recruitment work along the Eastern seaboard for 16 years. For the last 18 years, Father Hafner has lived in retirement with the Divine Word community in Techny.

Sr. Deborah Beck

Dominican Sister Deborah Beck died Sept. 15 at age 86. She was an elementary school teacher for 36 years.
Sr. Beck then served as pastoral administrator at Queen of Peace Ministry Center in Burbank. She retired in 2001.
