Lucille Menth

Cardinal George’s aunt

Lucille Menth, Cardinal George’s aunt, died Oct. 8 at age 92. She had been a resident of the Little Sisters of the Poor St. Joseph Home for the Elderly in Palatine since April.

Menth was the sister of Cardinal George’s mother, Julia.

She was known for her sense of humor. “She’d always have a joke to tell,” said Margaret Cain, Cardinal George’s sister. “She was feisty and really was a brave soul, living on her own until she was 90.”

One favorite memory is taking “Aunt Lucille” on her first airplane flight. “We took her to Portland in 1996 when my brother was made Archbishop of Portland,” Cain said. “She told everyone where we were going and why. She was very proud of her nephew. By the time we landed, the flight crew was bringing her flowers.”

Cardinal George celebrated a Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Menth at St. Joseph’s Home on Oct. 10.
