St. Walter Church
11700 S. Western Ave.
Driving by on Western Avenue, one can see the cast-metal outdoor Stations of the Cross on the grounds of St. Walters.
Inside the modern, yellow brick and Lannon stone church designed by Gaul and Voosen are other inspirations in art. Its 10 slender stained glass windows depicting the joyful and glorious mysteries are worked in deep, rich tones.
In recent years new lighting has brightened up the nave and a 100-year old crucifix from the former St. Hedwig Convent has been refurbished and raised over the tabernacle.
A lively contemporary choir is out of the loft and closer to worshippers now and the roomy narthex is a natural gathering space for conversation for the community.
Parish life includes adult education, Scripture study, and eucharistic adoration three days a week. Approaching its 50th jubilee, this is a parish that just keeps growing.
