Fr. Edward M. Barron

Served for 46 Years

A funeral Mass was offered for Fr. Edward M. Barron on June 20 at Our Lady of Knock Church, 501 163rd St., Calumet City.

Fr. Barron, a retired priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago, died June 16. Retired since 1984, Fr. Barron celebrated Sunday Mass at Our Lady of Knock Parish, Calumet City, for a number of years while residing in an area retirement community. He was 89 years old and served the archdiocese for 46 years.

Fr. Barron, a native of Chicago, graduated from Quigley Preparatory Seminary and St. Mary of the Lake Seminary, Mundelein. He was ordained in 1938 by Cardinal George Mundelein.

Fr. Barron served as associate pastor of St. Philip Neri Parish from 1938 to 1966. He was pastor for three years at St. Sebastian Parish, now closed, and served briefly as associate pastor of Our Lady of Knock Parish in Calumet City. In 1969, he became the chaplain at Elizabeth Seton High School, now Seton Academy, in South Holland, a position he held for 15 years until his retirement in 1984.

For the past two years, Fr. Barron was a resident of Holy Family Villa, a retirement home for priests in Lemont, and was moved to the adjacent Lyne Home when his deteriorating health required nursing care.

Sr. Maria Gerlinski

Missionary in South America

School Sister of Notre Dame Maria Gerlinski died on May 15 in Elm Grove, Wis.

During her years of ministry, she was involved in education, both as a teacher and administrator. She served as a missionary in Brazil and Paraguay.

She served at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Chicago as a bilingual teacher and community director. She also became a medical interpreter in a community health center while in residence at St. Mark and at St. Hedwig convents.

Dr. Lawrence W. Goedert

Doctor, Bishop’s Brother

Dr. Lawrence Walter Goedert, 78, died June 3 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center after an extended illness.

A native of Chicago, Dr. Goedert spent 22 years in Denver, Colo., where he was a specialist OB-GYN.

He retired from his private medical practice in 1978 and moved to Dothan, Alabama. He was a physician in the U.S. Army at Lyster Army Hospital for three years. He retired from the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1981. He continued to work with Civil Service at Lyster Army Hospital until 1995.

Fr. Malachy Dooley

educator for 5 Decades

Dominican Friar R. Malachy Dooley, 82, died June 15.

A native of Minneapolis, Minn., he studied for two years at St. Thomas College in St. Paul. He then entered the Dominican House of Studies in River Forest, Ill. He taught at Fenwick High School in Oak Park from 1950-63 and from 1973-2002.

Among his accomplishments include the construction of the school’s west wing and the establishment of the Blackfriars’ Dinner Dance.

In November 2001, Fenwick honored Dooley as the inaugural recipient of the Lumen Tranquillum Award, given annually to an individual role model for young people.

Fr. Michael Fernandez

Served in Spain, Chicago

Claretian Fr. Michael Fernandez, 76, died June 16. He was ordained in Spain in 1953 and served as a teacher in Claretian formation and academic centers in the Province of Castilla, Spain. He then served at a parish in San Marcos, Texas, from 1961-67, and at a parish in Puerto Rico from 1967-69.

Fernandez came to Chicago in 1969 and served as associate pastor of St. Francis of Assisi until 1972. He then served at Our Lady of Guadalupe as associate pastor from 1972-76, and as pastor from 1976-81. He returned to St. Francis of Assisi where he was associate pastor from 1981-82. He also served as associate pastor at Holy Cross/Immaculate Heart of Mary from 1982-84, and again at Our Lady of Guadalupe from 1984-95. In 1995, Fernandez served as parochial administrator of Our Lady of Guadalupe. He was named associate pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe for the third time in 1997.

Sr. Sara Kuhagen

Taught more than 50 years

School Sister of St. Francis Sara Rose Kuhagen, 89, died June 17 at Sacred Heart Convent, Milwaukee, Wis.

Born in Chicago, she was received into the School Sisters of St. Francis community in 1933 and made profession of vows in 1935.

She lived her religious ministry in education, teaching for more than 50 years in Wisconsin, Colorado and Illinois. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Cyprian in River Grove from 1961-84. She was also a substitute teacher and teacher’s aide at St. Cyprian from 1984-98.

Sr. Charlotte Schmidt

Musician and teacher

School Sister of St. Francis Charlotte Schmidt, 92, died June 17 at St. Joseph Convent, Campbellsport, Wis.

Born in New Guinea, she was received into the School Sisters of St. Francis community in 1925, and made profession of vows in 1932.

She was a musician and teacher in Illinois, Wisconsin and Nebraska. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Matthias in Chicago from 1926-30; Blessed Agnes in Chicago, 1932; Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Glenview, from 1947-48; and Ss. Cyril and Methodius, Chicago, from 1948-49.

Fr. Jerome Brzakowski

Served inner-city parishes

Divine Word Missionary Fr. Jerome Brzakowski, 86, died June 17 at the Divine Word Residence in Techny, Ill, where he had lived in retirement since 1999.

Born in Detroit, Mich., he was a Divine Word Missionary for 62 years. He was dedicated to serving in African American parishes in the inner cities of Chicago, St. Louis and New Orleans.

He served as pastor of St. Anselm from 1946-58; as pastor at St. Nicholas Parish in St. Louis from 1958-79; Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, New Orleans, from 1979-84; and St. Anthony Parish, Lafayette, La., from 1985-90.

Brzakowski retired to the Divine Word Missionaries’ community in Bordentown, N.J., in 1990, where he helped with weekend parish work in the vicinity.

Sr. Florence McKernin

Taught in Archdiocese

Adrian Dominican Sr. Florence Therese McKernin, 98, died on June 19 in Adrian, Mich.

Born in Chicago, she was a member of the Adrian Dominican Congregation for 75 years. She spent 64 years ministering in education in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and Florida. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she ministered at the following schools: St. Rita, 1945-50; St. Philip Neri, 1962-63; St Clare of Montefalco, 1965-66, St. Kilian, 1966-68; and St. Mary Star of the Sea, 1968-90.

She retired in 1990 and went to the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich.
