Sr. Margaret Mary Tracy

Former principal in Lemont

Dominican Sister Margaret Mary (Gerarda) Tracy, 87, died May 20 in Spokane, Wash.

The retired school teacher and administrator taught at St. Jarlath School, Chicago, 1940-43, and was principal at St. Patrick School in Lemont, 1950-56.

Fr. Donald Levernier

Served in Lithuania

Glenmary Father Donald Levernier, 67, died May 20 in Cincinnati, Ohio, after a year-long battle with cancer. A native of Evanston, he was a member of the Glenmary Home Missioners for 45 years.

He served as office manager at Glenmary’s Cincinnati headquarters from 1963 to 1968. He then was assigned to various Glenmary missions, serving as pastor of parishes in Sylvania, Ga., and in Franklin and Bryson City, N.C.

After a sabbatical visit to Lithuania in 1992, most of his time was spent ministering there, with the exception of a year in Hugo, Okla. He returned from Lithuania in the summer of 2001 after being diagnosed with cancer.

Surviving is a sister, Mary Lou Erickson.

Sr. M. Adolpha Rogala

Primary grade teacher

Felician Sister Mary Adolpha (Eleonore) Rogala, 90, died May 25 at Our Lady of the Angels Convent.

Born in North Chicago, she was a member of the Felician Sisters for 73 years. A primary grade teacher for 56 years, she loved to see her young students discover reading.

In addition to assignments in Minnesota and Wisconsin, she taught in Chicago at St. James, 1930-37, and Our Lady of the Gardens, 1965-70; in Niles at St. Hedwig Orphanage, 1937-40; and Our Lady of Ransom, 1970-99.

Sr. Francis R. Schwertman

Grade, high school teacher

School Sister of St. Francis Rene Schwertman, 89, died May 27 in Fond du Lac, Wis. A member of the community since 1931, she taught for 50 years in the Midwest.

In the archdiocese, her high school assignments included Alvernia, 1942-43, 1960-70 and 1979-80; St. Benedict, 1950-51 and 1956-59; Marist, 1973-79; and Immaculate Heart of Mary, Westchester, 1981-88.

Her grade school teaching assignments were at Our Lady of Victory, 1932-37; St. Joseph, Summit, 1937-38; St. Peter, Skokie, 1938-40; St. Philomena, 1941-42; and St. Dionysius, Cicero, 1947-48.

Sr. Joan Devane

Medical missionary in Africa

Medical Mission Sister Joan Devane, 81, died May 27 in Huntington Valley, Pa., after a long illness. Born in Chicago she was a graduate of the Academy of Our Lady.

She joined the Medical Mission Sisters in 1939 and served as a pharmacist at their hospital in Berekum, Ghana, from the late 1940s until 1958 when she returned to the United States to serve as assistant superior and then as novice mistress.

In 1967 she was elected regional superior for her community in Africa. After completing her term, she worked as medical department secretary of the Kenya Catholic Secretariat and founded MEDS, Mission for Essential Drugs and Supplies, which provided medicines to Christian health facilities in Kenya.

Sr. Jann Daun

Taught in archdiocese

School Sister of St. Francis Jann Daun, 89, died May 30 in Campbellsport, Wis. A retired teacher, she taught in Chicago at St. Philomena, 1933-34 and 1937-38; St. Nicholas, 1939-42; in Buffalo Grove at St. Mary, 1938-39; and in Cicero at St. Dionysius, 1954-63.

Sr. Anne Lyons

Taught in Chicago, Wilmette

Dominican Sister Anne (James Anne) Lyons, 79, died June 7 in Adrian, Mich. A native Chicagoan, she was in her 61st year of religious profession.

Sister Anne spent 28 years ministering in education in Illinois, Michigan and Florida. Her assignments included St. Philip Neri, 1941-43; Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette, 1965-67; St. James, Maywood, 1967-69.

Sr. Colette Martin

Teacher, social worker

Dominican Sister Colette (Loretta Angeline) Martin, 97, died June 8 in Adrian, Mich. She was retired after 33 years of ministering in education in the United States, Puerto Rico and Guayama. Her teaching assignments included Our Lady of Good Counsel, 1922-23, and St. Columbanus, 1923-24 and 1925-33.

She later ministered in social work at St. Matthew Parish, Chicago, 1940-46 and 1952-58.

Deacon Eugene Quinn

Served at Holy Ghost Church

A funeral Mass for Deacon Eugne Quinn was offered June 13 at Holy Ghost Church, South Holland, by Father Joseph Bennett. Deacon Quinn, 68, died June 9 at Ingalls Memorial Hospital, Harvey.

He was ordained to the permanent diaconate in 1986 and also served as a pastoral associate at the parish since retiring from LaPreferida Foods three years ago. He was especially active in bereavement ministry and sacramental preparation.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the Korean War.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Ellen; a son, Timothy; a daughter, Ann Marie; two grandchildren; and two brothers, Thomas and James.

Sr. Rebecca Shiroda

Taught in Chicago

Dominican Sister Rebecca (Thomas Edward) Shiroda, 87,died June 9 in Adrian, Mich. Her assignments included three Chicago schools: St. Clare of Montefalco, 1936-38; Queen of Angels, 1944-46; and St. Rita, 1956-57. She also served in Ohio and her native Michigan.

Br. Edward Fallon

Teacher, principal

A memorial Mass for Christian Brother Edward Fallon was offered June 17 at Queen of the Universe Church, where he had served since 1998 in the ministries of compassion and bereavement. Brother Edward, 68, died June 9 in Park Ridge.

Born in Chicago, he attended Visitation School and DeLaSalle Institute before joining the Christian Brothers in 1949. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from St. Mary’s College in Winona, Minn., and did postgraduate studies at DePaul, Loyola and Memphis State universities.

Brother Edward taught at several Chicago area high schools and in other states, as well as in four countries abroad. He was principal of Driscoll Catholic High School in Addison, Ill.; superintendent of St. Patrick High School, Chicago; and acting president of Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill. He also served in the offices of Catholic education in the Chicago and St. Paul-Minneapolis archdioceses.

Surviving are two brothers, Edward and Jerrold; and nieces and nephews.

Sr. Marie C. Bugganer

School principal, librarian

Sister of Charity Marie Colombiere Bugganer, 86, died June 9 in Cincinnati. She had been a Sister of Charity of Cincinnati for 67 years and an educator for more than 20 years.

She was principal of St. Sebastian High School, Chicago, 1960-64, and librarian at Elizabeth High School, South Holland, 1970-77.
