Sr. Ellen Robertson

Teacher, principal

Dominican Sister Ellen Robertson, 74, died May 7 in South Carolina, where she had been serving since 1972. Before becoming involved in community work, she taught in Chicago at Aquinas High School, 1962-64, and was principal and teacher at St. Matthew School, 1964-69.

Sr. Mary Jo Campbell

Teacher, principal

Dominican Sister Mary Jo (Mary Maxine) Campbell, 84, died May 10 at St. Theresa Hospital, Waukegan. The Chicago-born nun was in her 68th year in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sister Mary Jo was a teacher and administrator for 54 years in Michigan, Florida and Illinois. She was teacher and principal of Infant Jesus of Prague School, Flossmoor, 1958-64. She also taught at Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette, 1966-67.

Sr. M. Eymard Sanok

Primary grade teacher

Franciscan Sister Mary Eymard Sanok, 92, died May 11 at St. Anthony Home in Crown Point, Ind. A member of the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago since 1926, she taught every grade in elementary school but was especially known for her expertise in primary education.

In Chicago, she taught at St. Florian, St. Pancratius, Five Holy Martyrs and St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr schools.

Sr. Mary Agnes Seng

Second-grade, CCD teacher

Sister of Christian Charity Mary Agnes (Muriel Seng), 92, died May 15 at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette. Born in Chicago, she joined the congregation from St. Francis Xavier Parish in Wilmette.

From 1949 to 1968, she taught second grade and CCD classes at St. Gregory School. She also tutored for a year at Holy Ghost School, South Holland.

Sr. M. Cortona Phelan

Taught in Chicago

Franciscan Sister Mary Cortona (Marguerite) Phelan, 92, died May 15 in Clinton, Iowa. She had served as teacher and administrator at Mount St. Clare Academy and Mount St. Clare College, both in Clinton. She was president of the college from 1958 until 1968 when she was elected president of her congregation.

Her early assignments included six years at St. Francis de Paula School on Chicago’s South Side.

Sr. Mary Agnella Sieja

Franciscan Sister Mary Agnella (Genevieve) Sieja, 78, died May 17 in her 57th year of religious life. The retired teacher and principal was born in Chicago and attended St. Florian School. She joined the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago at the age of 20 and demonstrated her teaching talents as a novice at St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr School.

After earning a master’s degree in administration from Loyola University, she returned to St. Florian School as principal. She was principal at Five Holy Martyrs School 1950-56 and 1987-2001, establishing its pre-school program in 1995. She also served at St. Louise de Marillac School, LaGrange Park, for 19 years, including seven years as principal.

After retiring, she volunteered as a CCD teacher at SS. Cyril and Methodius Parish, Lemont.

Sr. Rosilla Gross

Music teacher

Dominican Sister Rosilla Gross, 95, died May 17 in Sinsinawa, Wis. An elementary and secondary teacher of music for 59 years, she taught in the Archdiocese of Chicago at St. Thomas the Apostle, 1928-35; Epiphany, 1939-40; St. Cajetan, 1943-48; St. Brendan, 1948-51; and St. Luke, River Forest, 1935-39.

Sr. Mary Ellen Kelly

Taught in Chicago

BVM Sister Mary Ellen Kelly, 93, died May 18 at Marian Hall in Dubuque, Iowa. A native Chicagoan, she joined the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1927.

She taught at schools in Iowa and Illinois. Her assignments in Chicago were at St. Tarcissus, 1938-43; St. Callistus, 1943-45; St. Thomas of Canterbury, 1946-47; St. Stanislaus/Sacred Heart, 1947-55; St. Dorothy, 1955-56; and St. Ferdinand, 1956-58.

Sr. M. Epiphany Gorski

St. Stanislaus sacristan

Franciscan Sister Mary Epiphany (Josephine) Gorski, 84, died May 18 at the motherhouse of the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago, Lemont.

A member of the community since the age of 13, she served at St. Elizabeth Day Care in Chicago as a novice and later returned to the city to work at Guardian Angel Day Care Center.

In 1947, she was assigned to St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr Parish where for the next 40 years she was parish sacristan. She was known for keeping the altar cloths spotless, the sacred vessels polished and for never allowing a wilted flower in the church.

Sr. Joann Luttenberger

Teacher for 60 years

School Sister of St. Francis Joann (Henriella) Luttenberger, 98, died May 19 at Sacred Heart Center, Milwaukee.

A teacher for more than 60 years, she taught in Chicago at St. William, 1924-26 and 1979-86; St. Matthias, 1927-28; Our Lady of Victory, 1928-37; Alvernia High School, 1938-41 and 1944-51. She also taught at St. Bernardine, Forest Park, 1951-52; St. Peter, Skokie, 1954-59; St. Joseph, Wilmette, 1962-64; and St. Mary, Buffalo Grove, 1966-68.

Sr. Miriam Joseph Cahill

Taught at Mother Guerin

Sister of Providence Miriam Joseph (Mary) Cahill, 89, died May 17 in Terre Haute, Ind. Sister Miriam taught at Mother Guerin High School, River Grove, from 1977 until 1988. She continued to live at the convent there until 1998.

In earlier assignments, she taught at Providence High School, Chicago, 1940-46 and 1956-67.
