Fr. Joseph G. Nowak

St. Michael pastor emeritus

A funeral Mass for Father Joseph G. Nowak was offered May 11 at St. Michael Church, 8237 S. South Shore Dr., where he was pastor emeritus.

Concelebrants of the Mass included Bishop Timothy J. Lyne, Thad Jakubowski and Joseph Perry.

Father Nowak, 84, died May 6 at Holy Family Villa, Lemont. Father Nowak headed St. Michael Parish from 1968 to 1988. After he was named pastor emeritus he continued to reside at the parish until his recent illness.

Ordained May 2, 1942, he was first assigned to St. Mary Magdalene Parish for eight years. Other assignments as associate pastor were at Transfiguration, 1950-52; St. Blase, Argo, 1952-54; St. Roman, 1954-60; St. Josaphat, 1960-66; and St. Ladislaus, 1966-68.

He also served as a member of the archdiocesan Presbyteral Council.

Born in Chicago, Father Nowak received his early education at St. Joseph School, 48th Street. He studied for the priesthood at Quigley Preparatory Seminary and St. Mary of the Lake Seminary.

Surviving are a sister, Sister Christine, SSJ-TOSF; a brother, Thomas; and many nieces and nephews.

Sr. Marie L. O’Dougherty

Taught in Chicago, suburbs

Dominican Sister Marie Loyola (Bernadette) O’Dougherty, 86, died April 17 in Sinsinawa, Wis. A retired teacher, she taught in the archdiocese at St. Basil, Chicago, 1953-56; St. Luke, River Forest, 1968-70; and St. Thomas of Villanova, Palatine, 1970-71.

Sr. Marcianne Hagan

Taught on South Side

Dominican Sister Marcianne Hagan, 92, died April 25 in Sinsinawa, Wis., where she was retired after teaching for 44 years. In Chicago, she taught at St. Brendan, 1944-45, and St. Cajetan, 1948-53.

Sr. Ann Marie Brost

Convent homemaker

School Sister of St. Francis Ann Marie (Tessa) Brost, 97, died April 26 at St. Joseph Convent, Campbellsport, Wis.

A member of the community since 1920, she served as a homemaker at St. Matthias, St. Benedict and St. Nicholas convents, Chicago; and St. Joseph Convent, Wilmette.

Catherine Levins

Deacon’s wife, mother

A funeral Mass for Catherine Levins was offered May 3 at SS. Faith, Hope and Charity Church, Winnetka. Mrs. Levins, 59, died April 29 at Rush North Shore Medical Center, Skokie.

Mrs. Levins was the wife of Deacon Terry Levins and completed training with him prior to his ordination to the permanent diaconate in 1990. She worked with her husband in the parish’s baptismal preparation program.

In addition to her husband, survivors include five sons, Frank, Philip, Richard, Patrick and Dan; a daughter, Mary Fisher; 12 grandchildren; a brother, Patrick Shields; and nieces and nephews.

Sr. Margaret Zonsius

Served at Mundelein College

BVM Sister Margaret (Frederick Cecile) Zonsius, who served more than 50 years at Mundelein College, died May 1 in Dubuque, Iowa. She was 94.

From 1939 to 1991, she served at Mundelein, where she taught economics and was bursar for 25 years. She also was secretary to five presidents of the college, and was director of student employment, financial aid and affirmative action. Before being assigned to Mundelein, she taught at St. Mary High School on the West Side for eight years.

Born in Chicago, she attended Queen of Angels School, Immaculata High School and DePaul University. She worked as a stenographer before joining the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1927.

Surviving are a sister, Mary Monahan, and a brother, Peter.

Sr. M. Laurine Baldyga

Taught in Chicago, suburb

Holy Family of Nazareth Sister M. Laurine Baldyga, 86, died May 4 at Nazarethville in Des Plaines. A member of the congregation for 71 years, she had taught for more than 50 years.

In Chicago, she taught at St. Hedwig, St. Hyacinth and Assumption BVM schools and Holy Family Academy. She also taught at St. Andrew in Calumet City.

Br. Michael Grace

Loyola University archivist

Jesuit Brother Michael Grace, archivist for Loyola University, died May 5 at the Jesuit residence at Loyola University.

Brother Grace came to Loyola in 1965 to work as assistant librarian in the E.M. Cudahy Library and in 1978 was named university archivist. In addition to preserving formal university documents, he maintained the papers of the Catholic Church Extension Society and those of Samuel Insull, a former Chicago public utilities magnate.

Brother Grace also served as the U.S. secretary for the Amici Thomae Mori, international organization devoted to the life and thought of St. Thomas More.

Born in Chicago in 1932, he attended St. Barnabas School, St. Ignatius College Prep and John Carroll University. After completing his novitiate, he served as librarian at Milford Novitiate and then at West Baden College in Indiana.

Surviving are a brother, Gerard, and a sister, Mary Clare O’Connell.

Sr. Bernice Downs

Taught in Chicago

Sister of Providence Bernice (Agnes) Downs, 91, died May 7 at St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind. A retired teacher, she taught in Chicago at St. Leo, 1930-31, and Immaculate Conception, West Talcott Avenue, 1932-35 and 1944-49.

Sr. Ellen Robertson

Teacher, principal

Dominican Sister Ellen Robertson, 74, died May 7 in South Carolina, where she had been serving since 1972. Before becoming involved in community work, she served in Chicago as teacher at Aquinas High School, 1962-64, and as principal and teacher at St. Matthew School, 1964-69.

Sr. Mary Jo Campbell

Teacher, principal

Dominican Sister Mary Jo (Mary Maxine) Campbell, 84, died May 10 at St. Theresa Hospital, Waukegan. The Chicago-born nun was in her 68th year of profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sister Mary Jo was a teacher and administrator for 54 years in Michigan, Florida and Illinois. She was teacher and principal of Infant Jesus of Prague School, Flossmoor, from 1958 to 1964. She also taught at Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette, 1966-67.

Sr. M. Eymard Sanok

Primary grade teacher

Franciscan Sister Mary Eymard Sanok, 92, died May 11 at St. Anthony Home in Crown Point, Ind. A member of the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago since 1926, she taught every grade in elementary school but was especially known for her expertise in primary education. In Chicago, she taught at St. Florian, St. Pancratius, Five Holy Martyrs and St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr schools.
