St. Cecilia Church
700 S. Meier Road, Mount Prospect
This post-Vatican II church was dedicated in 1970. Spacious enough to accommodate a segment of the Northwest suburbs growing population, the building is low and sprawling, shaped like a shell, Christian symbol of resurrection and baptism.
Seating 800, it has a quintessential people-friendly design just 15 pews deep in any section, with good sightlines and all on a single level. Simple face brick walls are accented with carved wooden statues of a few favored saints and a bas relief of Cecilia, Roman martyr and patron of church music.
Five years ago a $2.4 million renovation satisfied several parish needs: installing a hard ceiling made the churchs acoustics sound like a church, a meeting house was built that is also used for religious education classes, and making a large gathering space in the narthex area transformed it and helped neighbors meet neighbors in this multi-ethnic parish.
