Fr. Edward D. Skupien

Parish missions preacher

A funeral Mass for Father Edward D. Skupien was offered March 16 at St. Barbara Church, where he was pastor emeritus. Bishop Timothy Lyne celebrated the Mass.

Father Skupien, 89, died March 14 at St. Andrew Home in Niles, where he had resided in recent years.

Father Skupien, who grew up in St. Barbara Parish, was pastor there from 1966 until his retirement in 1983. Before assuming the pastorate, he was a member of the Archdiocesan Mission Band for 20 years, preaching parish missions for Polish Catholics in the archdiocese and throughout the Midwest.

Ordained on April 3, 1937, Father Skupien first served at Holy Innocents Parish for six years and then at St. Simeon Parish in Bellwood for several months before being named to the mission band.

Born in Chicago, he attended St. Barbara School and the archdiocesan seminaries.

Surviving are three sisters, Mary Zubek, Sister Gabriel of the Victory Knoll Sisters and Rita Lally; and nieces and nephews.

Sr. M. Demeteria Jawor

Served at St. Camillus

Holy Family of Nazareth Sister M. Demetria Jawor, 90, died Feb. 22 at Nazarethville, Des Plaines. She retired last year from St. Camillus School where she was serving as librarian and tutor.

She also taught at St. Michael School in South Chicago, Holy Trinity, St. Hedwig, St. Ann, Assumption BVM and St. Josaphat schools.

Sr. Catherine Becker

Music, piano teacher

Dominican Sister Catherine (Boniface) Becker, 84, died Feb. 26 in Sinsinawa, Wis. A retired music and piano teacher, she taught at SS. Faith, Hope and Charity in Winnetka, 1941-42.

Sr. Clarent M. Urbanowicz

Language teacher, principal

Franciscan Sister of Chicago Clarent Marie Urbanowicz, 92, died Feb. 27 at the motherhouse in Lemont. She was retired after 62 years of serving as a teacher, principal and assistant principal.

In Chicago, she taught at Five Holy Martyrs, St. Pancratius and St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr schools and Madonna High School.

From 1975 to 1988, she taught in the English as a Second Language Program at Daley College.

Sister Clarent Marie also taught Polish language and culture and was active with the Polish American Historical Association.

Sister received numerous awards from Polish organizations and in 1992 the consul general of the Commonwealth of Poland presented her with a medal from the ministry of education. She also led the campaign to name Marie Curie Sklodowska High School on the Southwest Side.

Sr. Henrietta Michel

Baker, receptionist

Sister of Christian Charity Henrietta Michel, 90, died March 3 at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette.

A retired cook and baker, she worked in convent kitchens of the motherhouse in Wilmette and Josephinum High School and St. Gregory in Chicago for 10 years, 1937-47. After serving in her native New Orleans from 1958 to 1993, she returned to Wilmette to work as part-time receptionist.

Fr. Oswald J. Marshall

Teacher, counselor

Jesuit Father Oswald J. Marshall, 87, died March 4 in Clarkston, Mich. A member of the Jesuits since 1933, he taught in Chicago at Loyola University, 1948-49. He then was regent and counselor at Loyola University Dental School, 1949-53.

Sr. Madonna M. Gerrity

Teacher for 44 years

Dominican Sister Madonna Michael (Mary Donna) Gerrity, 73, died March 7 in Adrian, Mich. A native Chicagoan and graduate of Aquinas High School, she was in her 53rd year of religious life.

Sister Madonna was retired after teaching for 44 years. Her local assignments were at St. Laurence, 1958-64; St. Kilian, 1964-67; St. Clare Montefalco, 1967-70; St. Denis, 1970-71; St. Patrick, 1971-75 and 1976-78; St. Mary Star of the Sea, 1978-85; and St. Emeric, Country Club Hills/St. Joseph/Homewood, 1991-97.

Surviving is a brother, Edward.

Sr. M. Camilla Cech

Teacher, healthcare worker

St. Cyril and Methodius Sister M. Camilla (Frances) Cech, 90, died March 7 in Danville, Pa. Sister Camilla taught for 41 years at schools in Illinois and Indiana. She was superior and principal at St. Simon School, 1955-58; and St. Paul, Chicago Heights, 1958-63.

She then served at healthcare facilities, including Villa St. Cyril, Highland Park, and St. Benedict Home, Niles.

Sr. Lillian Marie Victor

Teacher, organist

Felician Sister Lillian Marie Victor, 82, died March 9 at Swedish Covenant Hospital, Chicago.

The retired teacher and principal served in the archdiocese at SS. Peter and Paul, 1941-42 and 1949-50; St. Stanislaus, Posen, 1954-56 and 1973-80; St. Turibius, 1957-58; St. Joseph, 1959-60; St. James, 1963-65 and 1986-91; St. Wenceslaus, 1980-85; and St. John of God, 1985-86. She also taught music and played the organ at some of the parishes.

From 1992 to 1998, she served at St. Andrew Home in Niles.

Sr. Mary Skender

Teacher, secretary

Dominican Sister Mary (Mary Vincent) Skender, 79, died March 11 at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn. The Chicago-born nun ministered in education for 42 years.

Her local teaching assignments included St. Mary, Star of the Sea, 1968-69; St. Albert the Great, Burbank, 1969-73; and Our Lady of Loretto, Hometown, 1976-78. She also served as a secretary at St. Rita School, 1973-76, and Lourdes High School, 1980-91.

Surviving are two sisters, Anne Knawa and Joan Dundich; and a brother, Joseph.

Concetta F. Bruno

Retired Chancery staffer

A funeral Mass for Concetta Bruno was offered March 9 at St. Cyprian Church, River Grove. Concelebrants included her pastor, Father Ronald Navoy; Father Thomas Paprocki and Father Robert Kealy, former chancellors of the archdiocese.

Miss Bruno, 66, died March 6 in her home. She was retired after working 19 years at the Archdiocesan Pastoral Center, where she served as secretary to several chancellors.

A former member of St. Angela Parish, Miss Bruno was active in charismatic prayer groups and holy hours at both parishes.

Surviving are a brother Dan; a nephew and niece.

Alfreda Listecki

mother, homemaker

A funeral Mass for Alfreda A. Listecki was offered March 18 at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, Orland Hills. Principal celebrant and homilist was her son, Auxiliary Bishop Jerome E. Listecki. Cardinal George presided at the Mass.

Mrs. Listecki died March 14 at the age of 84.

Born Alfreda Kasprzyk in Chicago, she grew up in St. Michael Parish on South Shore Drive and was a graduate of both its grade school and high school. After her marriage to Harry Listecki, she was a homemaker and raised her two children in the parish. Mr. Listecki died in 1986.

Besides the bishop, survivors include a daughter, Mary “Penny” and a brother, Sylvester.

Angeline E. Stern

Former New World staffer

Funeral services were held March 20 for Angeline E. Stern, who died March 16. She was 86.

Mrs. Stern was retired after working for 18 years in the advertising and circulation departments of The New World. When she left the paper in 1986, the editor wrote that she “will be missed by readers and advertisers alike, many of whom she developed close contact with through years of weekly phone conversations.”

Her retirement gave her more time to donate to her parish, St. Bede the Venerable, where she was president of the Widows and Widowers Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Joseph. Surviving are two sons, John and Gary, four granddaughters and four stepgrandsons; 13 step-greatgrandchildren; and two sisters, Frances Bertucci and Josephine Haynes.
