Fr. Edward J. Morgan

Chicago priest for 64 years

A funeral Mass for Father Edward J. Morgan was celebrated March 4 at St. Thomas More Church by Bishop Timothy J. Lyne, vicar for senior priests. Father Morgan died Feb. 27 at age 91.

Father Morgan served for over 20 years as a confessor for several orders of nuns in convents throughout the archdiocese. He also served as pastor of St. Mary Parish in Buffalo Grove.

Ordained by Cardinal Mundelein in 1937, his first assignment was to Our Lady of Grace Parish. Other assignments as associate pastor were at St. Frances of Rome, Cicero, 1938-44; Annunciation, 1944-45; St. Brendan, 1945-55; Maternity BVM, 1955-56; St. Ailbe, 1956-64; and St. Kilian, 1964-68.

Born in Chicago, he attended St. Rita Grade School and St. Rita High School before beginning studies for the priesthood at Quigley Preparatory Seminary. He completed his studies at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary, Mundelein,

Surviving are a sister, Margaret Gutkoska; and many nieces and nephews.

Sr. Angela Marie Janus

Taught in archdiocese

Sister of St. Casimir Angela Marie (Maria Assumpta) Janus, 87, died Feb. 15 at the Sisters of St. Casimir motherhouse, Chicago. A former teacher, principal and office manager, she taught at All Saints School in Chicago and St. Norbert School in Northbrook.

Sr. Dorothy Will

Served at St. Christina Parish

Dominican Sister Dorothy (Leontia) Will, 86, died Feb. 11 in Sinsinawa, Wis. A native Chicagoan, she was professed as a Dominican in 1937 and taught in their schools for 38 years.

Her assignments included St. Sabina and Visitation in Chicago and Trinity High School in River Forest. From 1975 to 1991, she served at St. Christina Parish on the Southwest Side, visiting the sick and elderly.

Fr. Callistus Langerholz

Professor, pastor

A funeral Mass for Slovenian Franciscan Father Callistus (Franc) Langerholz was offered Feb. 21 at St. Mary’s Friary, Lemont. Father Langerholz died Feb. 16 at Mother Theresa Home in Lemont. He was 91 and had been a priest for 66 years.

Born in Austria, he grew up in Slovenia where he joined the Franciscan Fathers and was ordained in 1935.

After further studies in Rome, he came to the United States in 1948 and taught Scripture at St. Mary’s Seminary, Lemont, for seven years. He then earned a doctorate in Scripture in Jerusalem and returned to Illinois to teach at the Franciscan seminary in Teutopolis and at the Chicago Catholic Theological Union. In later years, he served as associate pastor at St. Stephen Parish and was spiritual director for its Holy Name Society.

Sr. Mary Lois Chadwick

Taught in Chicago

Sister of Mercy Mary Lois Chadwick, 89, died Feb. 16 at McAuley Manor in Aurora. A retired teacher, she served in Chicago at Resurrection, St. Finbarr and St. Clotilde schools and at St. Xavier College.

Sr. M. Elaine Schornak

Nurse, hospital visitor

Franciscan Sister of Mary M. Elaine Schornak, 87, died Feb. 18 in Richmond Heights, Mo. She served as a nurse at hospitals in Missouri and Wisconsin. In 1976, she received a certificate in pastoral visitation and later served as a sister visitor at St. Francis Hospital and Health Center, Blue Island.

Fr. Clement Sobr

Teacher, pastor

A funeral Mass for Benedictine Father Clement Sobr, who died Feb. 19, was celebrated Feb. 23 at St. Procopius Abbey, Lisle. He was 81.

Born in Turtle Creek, Pa., he grew up in St. Procopius Parish, Chicago. After serving with the U.S. Marines during World War II, he joined the monastery and in 1947 and was ordained in 1951.

For 13 years, he taught at St. Procopius Seminary in Lisle, where he also served as vice rector. He later served as procurator at the abbey in Lisle. He also served at parishes in Wisconsin, including pastorates at St. Patrick and St. Mary in Philips, Wis.

Sr. Dorothy Badke

Served at St. Benedict

School Sister of St. Francis Dorothy (Antonius) Badke, 83, died Feb. 20 in Milwaukee. A native Chicagoan, she joined the community in 1937 and served at schools in Wisconsin, Illinois and Nebraska. In Chicago, she served for 23 years at St. Benedict High School, as teacher, 1965-75; assistant principal, 1975-83; and principal, 1983-88. She also taught at St. William School, 1952-53.

Sr. M. Theodorette Ziedas

Teacher, principal

A funeral Mass for Sister of St. Casimir M. Theodorette Ziedas, who died Feb. 21, was offered at the motherhouse on the South Side. A native Chicagoan, she was a member of the congregation for 71 years.

Sister Theodorette taught at Maria High School for 28 years. Other local teaching assignments were at Nativity BVM, St. Anthony in Cicero, All Saints and St. Casimir Academy. She also served as principal at Immaculate Conception School, 44th Street, and at schools in New Mexico.

Surviving is a sister, Laura Shurna; and nieces and nephews.

Patricia Eggert

St. Thomas More teacher

A funeral Mass for Patricia Eggert was offered Feb. 22 at St. Thomas More Church. Miss Eggert, 57, died of a heart attack Feb. 19 in St. Thomas More Church where she was attending Mass with her eighth-grade religion class.

Miss Eggert worked for many years for the Chicago Park District. During this time, she also was a part-time reading teacher at Visitation School.

After retiring from the Park District in 1997, she worked as a lay associate with the Dominicans in Sinsinawa, Wis., for two years. She had taught at the South Side school for the past four years.

Surviving is her brother, John.

Margaret Mary Moran

Former teacher, principal

A memorial Mass for Margaret Mary Moran, who died Feb. 20, will be offered at 10:30 a.m. March 23 at the Franciscan Motherhouse, 520 Plainfield Ave., Joliet. Miss Moran was an elementary school teacher at various South Side schools and was a former principal of Assumption BVM and Assumption-St. Catherine of Genoa schools.

Surviving are a brother, Tom; a sister, Patricia Mortensen; and several nieces and nephews.

Sr. M. Gracilia Pawlikowski

Teacher, musician

Felician Sister Mary Gracilia Pawlikowski, 86, died Feb. 25 at St. Francis Hospital, Evanston. A Chicago native, she joined the Felicians in 1933 and was a full-time music instructor at the elementary school and college levels.

Local assignments included St. Wenceslaus, St. Turibius, Sacred Heart, St. Bronislava, St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr in Posen, St. Bruno, St. Isidore, Holy Innocents, St. John of God, St. Mary Magdalen, St. Joseph and Our Lady of Ransom in Niles. Her last local assignment was at Felician College, 1984-89.

Sr. M. Adeleita Healey

Retired teacher, principal

BVM Sister Adeleita Healey, 97, died Feb. 26 in Dubuque, Iowa, where she was retired after a long teaching career. In Chicago, she taught at Immaculata High School, 1925-47, and Cathedral High School, 1956-57. She was principal and superior of St. Mary High School on the West Side, 1959-65.

Sr. Clarent M. Urbanowicz

Language teacher, principal

Franciscan Sister of Chicago Clarent Marie Urbanowicz, 92, died Feb. 27 at the motherhouse in Lemont. She was retired after 62 years of education ministry, serving as a teacher, principal and assistant principal. In Chicago, she taught at Five Holy Martyrs, St. Pancratius and St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr schools and Madonna High School.

From 1975 to 1988, she taught in the English as a Second Language Program at Daley College.

Sister Clarent Marie also taught Polish language and culture and was active with the Polish American Historical Association, serving as the association’s treasurer for 16 years and vice president for four years. She received numerous awards from Polish organizations and in 1992 the consul general of the Commonwealth of Poland presented her with a medal from the ministry of education. Another achievement was her successful campaign to name Marie Curie Sklodowska High School on the Southwest Side.

In her community, she served as vocation director and as membership chairman for the Guild of Mother Mary Theresa Dudzik.

Sr. Elinor Patrice Hughes

Teacher, principal

Dominican Sister Elinor Patrice (Adele Cecilia) Hughes, 88, died March 1 in Adrian, Mich. Her teaching assignments included Bishop Quarter Military School in Oak Park, St. Laurence and St. Rita. From 1955 to 1961, she was principal of St. Matthew School.

Fr. Oswald J. Marshall

Teacher, counselor

Jesuit Father Oswald J. Marshall, 87, died March 4 in Clarkston, Mich. A member of the Jesuits since 1933, he taught in Chicago at Loyola University, 1948-49. He then was regent and counselor at Loyola University Dental School. 1949-53.
