Fr. William Quinlan

Retired St. Bernardine pastor

A funeral Mass for Father William Quinlan was offered Feb. 2 at Our Lady of the Wayside Church, Arlington Heights, with Bishop Timothy Lyne presiding.

Father Quinlan, pastor emeritus of St. Bernardine Parish in Forest Park, died Jan. 25 at his winter residence at Good Shepherd Parish in Tallahassee, Fla. He was 88 and had been living at Our Lady of the Wayside.

Father Quinlan was pastor of St. Bernardine from 1967 to 1977. Prior to that, he was pastor of St. Brendan Parish for two years.

Ordained in 1938, his first assignment was to St. Gertrude Parish, Franklin Park, for five years. Other assignments as associate were at St. Sabina Parish, 1943-1951; St. Gertrude, Franklin Park, 1951-1964; and St. Francis de Sales, Lake Zurich, 1964-1965.

He also was associate pastor of St. Mary Parish, Mundelein, from 1978 until his retirement in 1983.

Fr. George Slominski

Retired pastor, professor

A funeral Mass for Father George Slominski was offered Feb. 13 at St. Christina Church, Chicago. Father Slominski, a priest who served the Archdiocese of Chicago as a seminary and college instructor, pastor, hospital and secondary school chaplain, died Feb. 8 at the Resurrection Life Center in Chicago. He was 89.

Ordained on April 23, 1938, Father Slominski did post-graduate work in theology at the seminary and in 1940 was assigned to the faculty. He held a licentiate and a doctorate in sacred theology.

He left the seminary in 1947 to serve as chaplain at Columbus Hospital for 18 years. During this time, he also served on the theology faculty at Loyola University and taught ethics and psychology in the hospital affiliation program of DePaul University. In 1965, he became chaplain at the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth motherhouse in Des Plaines.

From 1966 to 1979, he was pastor of St. Ann Parish in Lansing. From 1967-1980, he also was a professor at Calumet College, Whiting, Ind., and later taught at Lewis College in Romeoville. After leaving St. Ann, he served as chaplain and director of the theology department of Maria High School and helped in pastoral services at Holy Cross Hospital.

Father Slominiski also served as chaplain of the Naim conference for Catholic widowed and was the editor of Sursum Corda, a newsletter for retired priests of the archdiocese. He also assisted in the pastoral care department at Christ Hospital and at Little Company of Mary Hospital.

Born in Chicago on Sept. 25, 1912, he attended Maternity BVM School, Quigley Preparatory Seminary and St. Mary of the Lake Seminary.

He retired in 1985.



Fr. Anthony Stefaniak

Retired Priest from Poland A funeral Mass for Father Anthony Stefaniak was offered Feb. 4 at St. Joseph Parish, Libertyville.

Father Stefaniak, a priest in the archdiocese for many years, died Jan. 31 at Libertyville Manor where he lived since 1977. He was 92.

Ordained in 1938 for the Archdiocese of Gniezno, Poland, Father Stefaniak had resided in the Chicago Archdiocese since 1955. He was assistant pastor at St. Fidelis Parish from 1956 until his retirement in 1974. At that time he was named associate emeritus of St. Fidelis.

Fr. Benno J. Korbic

Served at St. Mary’s Friary

A funeral Mass for Slovenian Franciscan Father Benno J. Korbic was offered Feb. 7 at St. Mary’s Friary in Lemont. Father Korbic, 87, died Feb. 2 after a long illness at Mother Theresa Home, Lemont.

Born in Slovenia, he entered the Franciscan novitiate there in 1931 and was ordained in 1940. During World War II, he was arrested by the German Gestapo and sent to Dachau, where he stayed until liberated by the American Army.

He then worked with refugees in Germany and Australia until coming to the United States. In Chicago, he served as associate pastor of St. Stephen Parish, 1980-83. At St. Mary’s Friary in Lemont, he was local superior, 1960-64; and vicar, 1958-60 and 1983-96.

Sr. Dolores Brooks

8th Day Center for Justice

A funeral Mass for Dominican Sister Dolores (Laurus) Brooks was offered Jan. 28 at St. Dominic Villa, Sinsinawa, Wis. Sister Dolores died there on Jan. 22. She was 73.

Born in Chicago, she attended the Academy of Our Lady. After graduating from St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Ind., she entered the Dominican novitiate.

Sister Dolores was a social studies teacher and principal for 23 years, with assignments in the Midwest, Wyoming and New York.

In Chicago, she served at St. Clement Parish as a pastoral associate, 1976-86. From 1987 to March 2001, she was part of the support staff of the 8th Day Center for Justice in Chicago and then became part-time co-chair of the Illinois 8th Day Center for Justice.

Surviving are a sister, Suzanne, and a brother, Robert.

Sr. M. Charitina Szacik

Hospital records librarian

Sister of the Holy Family of Nazareth M. Charitina Szacik died Jan. 9 at Nazarethville, Des Plaines. All her active ministry was spent in health care as a records librarian at St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital in Chicago and at several hospitals in Texas.

Sr. Ernestine Skibinski

Nurse’s aide, cook

Sister of the Holy Family of Nazareth M. Ernestine Skibinski died Jan. 15 at Nazarethville, Des Plaines. She worked as a nurse’s aide at several of hospitals.

She served as a cook in the archdiocese at St. Blase, St. Patricia, St. Hyacinth, St. Josaphat and St. Michael convents.

Sr. Imelda House

Taught in Chicago

Dominican Sister Imelda (Marie) House, 94, died Jan. 15 in Adrian, Mich. She was retired after ministering in education for 42 years. In Chicago, she taught at
at St. Kilian, St. Clare of Montefalco, St. Philip Neri, St. Kevin, St. Columbanus and St. Rita.

Sr. LaSalette Zegers

Taught the hearing-impaired

BVM Sister LaSalette Zegers, 90, died Jan. 21 in Dubuque, Iowa. She was retired after teaching for 40 years. Twenty-two of those years were spent in education to the hearing-impaired.

She was a member of the team that opened the first Catholic Center for the Deaf at St. Gregory School. She also taught at St. Mel/Holy Ghost and Holy Redeemer in Evergreen Park.

Born in Chicago, she graduated from Queen of Angels School and Immaculata High School.

Sr. Mary Leone Funke

Convent homemaker

School Sister of St. Francis Mary Leone (Urban) Funke, 92, died Jan. 23 in Campbellsport, Wis. She had served as a homemaker at convents in the archdiocese for 65 years. Her assignments included St. Benedict in Chicago, St. James in Arlington Heights, St. Peter in Skokie and Our Lady of Charity in Cicero.

Sr. Mary Magdalen Nolan

Hospital administrator

Little Company of Mary Sister Mary Magdalen Nolan, died Jan. 24. She had served as administrator of Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, as well as hospitals in California and Indiana.

Sr. Blandina Mosgrove

Taught at Immaculata

BVM Sister Blandina Mosgrove, 99, died Jan. 23 in Dubuque, Iowa. She had taught at Immaculata High School in Chicago, 1924-37. She lived in retirement at Wright Hall.
