Msgr. Donald M. Carroll

Retired pastor, chaplain

A funeral Mass for Msgr. Donald M. Carroll was offered Jan. 9 at St. Timothy Parish by Cardinal George.

Msgr. Carroll died Jan. 3 at the age of 92.

Msgr. Carroll was ordained a priest on April 7, 1934, and then went to Rome to study canon law, earning a doctorate from the Gregorian University in 1937. Returning to Chicago, he served as associate pastor at Visitation Parish for five years.

In 1942, he was appointed to the office of the apostolic delegate in Washington D.C. During these years, he also was chaplain at St. Ann Infant Home.

In 1956, Msgr. Carroll was named bishop-elect of the Rockford Diocese, an appointment he was forced to resign due to ill health.

He served as pastor of St. Edmund Parish, Oak Park, 1956-67, and then was chaplain at Columbus Hospital until retiring in 1980.

Born in Chicago in 1934, he attended Blessed Sacrament School and the archdiocesan seminaries.

Survivors include a brother, Father Gilbert Carroll, pastor emeritus of St. Timothy Parish.

Fr. C. Leo Sweeney

Philosophy professor

Jesuit Father C. Leo Sweeney, Loyola University philosophy professor and author, died Dec. 8, at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Father Sweeney was professor of philosophy at Loyola for the past 29 years. Prior to that he taught philosophy at St. Louis University, Creighton University and the Catholic University of America.

Throughout his career, Father Sweeney did extensive research on the subject of neo-platonism, a system of thought begun by Plotinus, an Egyptian-Roman philosopher whose work influenced early Christian theology. In 1986 he was elected president of the U.S. section of the International Society of Neoplatonic Studies.

In addition to his many articles and papers, Father Sweeney published a number of books on philosophy and metaphysics.

A native of O’Connor, Neb., he entered the Society of Jesus in 1936 and was ordained a priest on June 14, 1949. He held a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Toronto.

Fr. Robert Kucera

Missionary in South Africa

A memorial Mass for Servite Father Robert M. Kucera was offered Jan. 8 at St. Domitilla Church, Hillside. Father Kucera, 73, died Dec. 20 at Empangeni Garden Clinic in KwaZulu-Natal, Republic of South Africa.

The former Chicagoan had served in Zululand, Republic of South Africa, since 1953. For the past 48 years he had served as a missionary and superior in various missions under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Province of Servites. He also was vicar provincial from 1982 to 1988.

Born in Oak Park, he attended St. Rita School and St. Philip High School before entering the Servite novitiate in 1946. He completed his studies at Stonebridge Priory, Lake Bluff, and at the Servite College in Rome.

He was ordained in Rome in 1953 and returned to Chicago to offer his first Mass. That same year he was assigned to Zululand. His funeral Mass was offered at Good Shepherd Mission in Hlabisa and burial was in the Servite plot there.

Surviving are three brothers, Thomas, John and James, and a sister, Sister Mercedes, OP.

Sr. Vincentia Autch

Taught at St. Brendan

Dominican Sister Vincentia Autch, 96, died Dec. 23 at St. Dominic Villa in Sinsinawa, Wis. She served as a teacher and principal for 46 years, including a teaching post at St. Brendan School in Chicago, 1953-54.

Sr. Agnes Rose Skluzacek

teacher, bookkeeper

School Sister of St. Francis Agnes Rose (Agnesia) Skluzacek, 91, died Dec. 24 in Milwaukee. She celebrated her 75th anniversary in religious life this year. From 1979 to 1992, she lived in Chicago, serving as a bookkeeper and tutor in her retirement years.

Earlier, her teaching assignments were at Our Lady of Good Counsel, Blessed Agnes, Holy Angels and St. Martin.

Sr. Margaret C. O’Boyle

taught in Chicago

Sister of Providence Margaret Celine (Cecilia) O’Boyle, 85, died Dec. 25 at St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind.

A native of Forest Park, she joined the Sisters of Providence in 1935 and taught in their schools in Indiana, Illinois, Massachusetts and California. In Chicago, her assignments included St. Athanasius, Maternity BVM, St. Angela, St. Agnes and at Immaculate Conception, where she served from 1962 to 1986.

Fr. Nicholas M. Norusis

pastor, teacher

A funeral Mass for Servite Father Nicholas M. (Anthony) Norusis was offered Dec. 28 at St. Domitilla Church, Hillside. Father Norusis, 86, died Dec. 25 at Resurrection Life Center, where he had lived since April 2000.

Prior to that, the Chicago native had served many years in the Archdiocese of Denver. He was associate pastor at parishes in Denver and Westminster, Colo. From 1988 to 1998, he was on the Chancery staff, ministering to the divorced and separated.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, he taught at St. Philip High School, 1938-40 and 1944-47, and was associate pastor at Our Lady of Sorrows, 1949-50, and Annunciata, 1953-61.

Other parish assignments were in Missouri, New Jersey and Oregon. He was pastor of St. Rita Parish in Portland, Ore., and also was director of the Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother there.

Father Norusis grew up in Immaculate Conception Parish (44th Street), where he attended grade school before beginning studies for the priesthood at Mater Dolorosa Seminary in Hillside. He was ordained there May 21, 1944.

Sr. Connie Smedinghoff

A memorial Mass for Notre Dame de Namur Sister Connie Smedinghoff will be offered at 2 p.m. Jan. 26 at Notre Dame High School Convent, 3058 W. Mango. Sister

Connie, 75, died of cancer on Dec. 26.

The Chicago native began teaching in 1948 in Cincinnati. From 1952 to 1957, she taught at Notre Dame High School in Chicago.

She ministered at St. Victor Parish, Calumet City, from 1982 to 1987. Since 1991, she did spiritual direction/retreat work in Chicago and was on the board of Notre Dame High School.

She also did retreat work in Ottawa, Canada, 1987-91, and was campus minister at the University of Michigan, 1969-76.

Surviving are a sister, Ruth; three sisters-in-law, Sue, Pat and Sue; and many nieces and nephews.

Sr. Genevieve Wiser

Served at St. Anne

School Sister of St. Francis Genevieve (Lucas) Wiser, 89, died Dec. 28 in Milwaukee. From 1981 to 1997, she had ministered at St. Anne Parish in Barrington as computer coordinator in the school and sacristan in the church. Previous Chicago assignments were at St. Benedict, 1950-51, and St. Matthias, 1951-53.

Sr. Matthew K. Blaney

Nursing assistant

Franciscan Sister Matthew Kathleen Blaney, 67, died Dec. 30 at Immaculata Congregational Home in Bartlett. She had been a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Third Order of St. Francis for 44 years.

After serving as a religious educator, she later was a nursing assistant at Addolorata Villa in Wheeling, St. Benedict Home in Niles and the infirmary at the convent in Bartlett.

Sr. Elizabeth Ann Glysh

Former Alvernia principal

School Sister of St. Francis Elizabeth Ann Glysh, 64, died Dec. 30 in Campbellsport, Wis.

Sister Elizabeth taught science, math and photography at Alvernia High School, 1958-61, and then was principal there for three years. From 1980 to 1998, as director of Glysh & Associates, she provided consulting, data processing, proposal writing and technical writing services for businesses. She also taught finance and management information system in various university and adult education programs.

Sr. M. Ilga Knaup

served in Riverdale

Sister of Christian Charity M. Ilga (Hedwig) Knaup, 94, died Dec. 30 at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette. A native of Germany, she came to the United States in 1937 and taught in Schools in the Midwest. From 1983 to 1988, she served as a tutor and teacher aide at St. Mary School, Riverdale.

Sr. Katherine Ward

teacher, music director

BVM Sister Katherine (Jean Helene) Ward, 85, died Jan. 1 in Dubuque, Iowa. She taught in Chicago at Our Lady of Lourdes, 1936-38; St. Gertrude, 1949-50; and Immaculata High School, 1970-71. She also taught at Carmel High School in Mundelein, 1965-70.

She was involved in parish ministry at Our Lady of the Brook, Northbrook, 1976-77, and was director of music at Queen of Angels Parish, Chicago, 1982-86.

Sr. Lucy Sliwinski

taught on South Side

A funeral Mass for Franciscan Sister Lucy Sliwinski was offered Jan. 9 at Immaculata Convent in Bartlett, where she had been retired since 1995. Sister Lucy died Jan. 5 at the age of 82. A teacher in Illilnois and Indiana, she taught in Chicago at St. Salomea and Immaculate Conception schools.

Surviving is a sister, Sue Chwalisz, nieces and a nephew.
