FFr. Julian Grinis

Retired St. Alphonsus pastor

A funeral Mass for Father Julian G. Grinis was offered Dec. 14 at St. Bede the Venerable Church. Father Grinis, 87, died Dec. 11 at Mother Theresa Home in Lemont.

Father Grinis was retired after serving as pastor of St. Alphonsus Church, Lemont, for 14 years.

Ordained April 15, 1939, his first assignment was to St. Anthony Parish in Cicero. Other assignments as associate pastor were at St. George, 1945-51; Holy Cross, 1951-60; St. Christina, 1960-66; and St. Joseph (South Saginaw Avenue), 1966-69. He retired from St. Alphonsus in 1983.

Born in Chicago, he graduated from Our Lady of Vilna School before studying at the archdiocesan seminaries.

Surviving is a brother, Father Bruno B. Grinis.

Father Francis T. Pribyl

Retired St. Agnes pastor

A funeral Mass for Father Francis T. Pribyl was offered Dec. 18 at St. Agnes of Bohemia Church, where he was pastor emeritus. Father Pribyl, 89, died Dec. 13 at McNeal Hospital, Berwyn.

Father Pribyl became pastor of St. Agnes (then known as Blessed Agnes Parish) in 1969 and served there until 1982. Prior to that, he was pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel for seven years.

Other parish assignments were at Mother of God, Waukegan, 1939-42; St. John Nepomucene, 1942-47; Mary Queen of Heaven, Cicero, 1949-50; St. Ludmilla, 1950-59; and St. Priscilla, 1959-62. He also had served as music professor at Quigley Preparatory Seminary and director of chant at Holy Name Cathedral. He was chaplain of the Chicago District Alliance of Czech Catholics.

Born in Chicago, he attended St. Frances of Rome School in Cicero and St. Procopius Academy in Lisle before studying at the archdiocesan seminaries. He was ordained April 15, 1939.

Sr. Dolores Kane

Hospital administrator

Religious Hospitaller of St. Joseph Sister Dolores Kane, 79, died Nov. 9 in Kingston, Ontario. Born in Chicago, she joined the community 59 years ago.

From 1948 to 1970, she was assigned to St. Bernard Hospital on the South Side, serving in various capacities, including supervisor of the maternity department and surgical nursing, nursing instructor and director of the school of nursing. She also served as administrator at hospitals in Canada and founded the Warriors Association, an interfaith prayer group for the sick.

Surviving are a brother, Patrick Kane, and nieces and nephews.

Sr. Joseph M. Kapanowski

Teacher, librarian

A funeral Mass for Holy Family of Nazareth Sister Joseph Marie Kapanowski was offered at St. Emily Church, Mount Prospect. Sister Joseph died Nov. 24 at St. Emily Convent, where she had ministered for almost 10 years, first as a librarian and then as a tutor.

Before that, she had taught at several schools in the archdiocese, including St. Michael in South Chicago, Immaculate Heart of Mary, St. Joseph Mission, St. Hedwig, Holy Trinity, St. John the Baptist in Harvey, St. Hyacinth and Holy Family Academy, where she taught English for many years.

Deacon Donald A. O’Grady

Served at Queen of Angels

A funeral Mass for Deacon Donald A. O’Grady was offered Dec. 2 at Queen of Angels Church where he had ministered until his retirement in 1993. Mr. O’Grady, 80, died Nov. 29 in his home.

A U.S. Marine veteran of World War II, he was ordained a permanent deacon with the class of 1972 and ministered first at St. Jerome Parish. After then serving in the Diocese of Rockville Center, N.Y., for six years, he returned to Chicago and was assigned to Queen of Angels Parish.

Surviving are three daughters, Ellyn, Clare and Michelle; two sons, John and Christopher; and six grandchildren.

Sr. Janet McGonigle

Music teacher

BVM Sister Janet McGonigle, 85, died Dec. 1 in Dubuque, Iowa. A retired music teacher, she taught in Chicago at St. Jerome, 1938-41; St. Charles, 1941-45; and St. Ferdinand, 1965-90. In retirement, she lived and volunteered at St. Eugene Parish, 1990-2001.

Fr. Arthur A. Lemrise

Missionary to Japan

Viatorian Father Arthur A. Lemrise, 87, died Dec. 2 at Resurrection Hospital. Father Lemrise, who had lived at the Viatorian Provincial Center in Arlington Heights for the past year, was among the first missionaries admitted to Japan after World War II.

He spent 15 years in the Far East as a teacher and auxiliary chaplain to the U.S. Armed Forces.

Ordained in Chicago in 1944, he assisted Bishop Bernard Sheil in working with parolees in Chicago. He also taught at St. Philip Basilica High School, 1944-49.

Fr. Armand Gress

former St. Michael pastor

Benedictine Father Armand (Edmund) Gress, 90, died Nov. 1 in Richfield, Ohio. He was a monk of St. Andrew Svorad Abbey in Cleveland for 70 years.

Father Gress served for 33 years as pastor of St. Michael the Archangel Church, 48th Street and Damen Avenue. Under his leadership the church was remodeled, a parish social center was built and and the school was expanded.

Father Gress also served as vice president of the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council.

Sr. Regina Wojinski

teacher for 64 years

Dominican Sister Regina (Francis Ann) Wojinski, 91, died Dec. 2 in Adrian, Mich.

A teacher for 64 years, she taught in Chicago at St. Mary of Mount Carmel, St. Clare of Montefalco and St. Kilian; and in Oak Park at St. Edmund.

Sr. Jean Aufderheide

Dominican Sister Jean Aufderheide, 70, died Dec. 7 in Adrian , Mich. A teacher for 48 years, she taught in Chicago at St. Kilian School.
