St. Cornelius Church
5205 N. Lieb Ave., Chicago
This cruciform church of cheery brick and Bedford stone in the
Jefferson Park area was designed by architects Barry and Kay and
dedicated in 1965 by Bishop Aloysius Wycislo.
Its 35-foot floor to ceiling modern panels of stained glass speak
in graceful symbols: grape vines and wheat behind the shrine to
St. Pius X; lilies in blues and whites behind the white marble
Pieta; waves and fish near the baptismal font.
Its interior is bright with a skylight over the altar to illuminate
a unique three-dimensional mosaic on the chancel wall: Christs
five wounds amid a crown of thorns, like a huge sunburst that
encircles a statuary expression of Calvary.
Worshippers here are people of prayer, with vigil lights aglow
at each shrine. Since many are city employees, police and fire
fighters, they help keep the city that works working.
Parishioners are pro-life, pro-neighbor and currently making their
church handicap accessible.
