Parishes can display ‘Open Hearts’
The Chicago Archdiocese and Pathways Awareness Foundation invite parishes to apply for “Open Hearts Awards,” given to parishes that show leadership in including people with disabilities in worship. Awards of $1,000 will be granted in the areas of affirmation, communication and accessibility. Entries are due by June 15. For information, call Pathways at (800) 955-2445.

DePaul orchestra holds spring concert
The DePaul Symphony Orchestra presents its 25th annual Joseph and Marie Grant Spring Concert at 8 p.m. May 23. The orchestra will perform works by Samuel Barber and Tchaikovsky, as well as Mozart’s “Clarinet Concerto,” featuring Chicago Symphony Orchestra principal clarinetist Larry Combs, at Orchestra Hall, 220 S. Michigan Ave. The concert showcases the student orchestra under the direction Cliff Colnot. For tickets, call (312) 294-3000.

Mourn the dead at interfaith service
All are welcome at the 16th annual Interfaith Memorial Service for Indigent Persons from noon to 12:50 p.m May 23 at Chicago Temple First United Methodist Church, 77 W. Washington St. The service commemorates the lives of those recently buried by Cook County. Call (773) 278-6724 for information.

Fire department Memorial Day Mass
Deceased members of the Chicago Fire Department will be honored at the 69th annual Memorial Day parade and Mass at St. Josaphat Church, 2311 N. Southport Ave., on May 28. The parade begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. For information, call Fire Chaplain Father Tom Mulcrone at (312) 738-9246.

Umoja: Young adults unity retreat
The African-American Young Adult Association and the Vicariate VI Youth/Young Adult Office are sponsoring a retreat for African-Americans ages 21-35 called “Umoja: Coming Together in Unity” July 13-15 at Cabrini Retreat Center in Des Plaines.
