Queen of Angels Church
2330 W. Sunnyside Ave., Chicago
Queens maintains a grace to combine various elements into a
pleasing totality. Dedicated in 1940, this second edifice, completed
by architects McCarthy, Smith & Eppig, had problems. Positioned
over an underwater stream, engineers had to sink concrete piling
so upper construction could be completed. Within its sturdy grey
stone exterior is a modern Gothic design that includes touches
of art deco, gently mixing traditional with contemporary. Fantastic
German mahogany accents, in a towering baldachino and wainscoting,
were installed using the artistry of Irish carpenters. While the
original pipe organ (still in use) is a German Möller, the magnificent
stained glass windows are from France, marble from Italy. Today
its founding families are blending with newcomers from Mexico
and Asia in liturgies, ministries and education that encompass
all ages and cultures in this vibrant area near bustling Lincoln
Avenue.
