St. Genevieve Church
4835 W. Altgeld Street, Chicago
This modern-Romanesque edifice dedicated in 1941, cost $250,000its
renovation last year bore the same price tag. The architects
name is a mystery, as is the artist who designed its lovely stained
glass windows depicting saintly favorites of parish founders.
St. Genevieve fills the window over the entrance. An immense crucifix,
flanked by statues of The Twelve, compose the carved wood reredos
guarded by golden art deco angels. Its altar contains a unique
inlaid marble pelican, symbolizing Christ as Eucharist, and a
40s Moeller pipe organ is one more treasure. With new Hispanic
parishioners worshipping here, other shrines and devotions have
been added to existing ones. This faith community is committed
to inventing ways to talk and pray with each other, sometimes
in three languages. The parish school will celebrate its 75th
anniversary at a 2 p.m. Mass March 25 followed by a reception.
