St. Cyprian Church
2601 N. Clinton St.
River Grove
On the outside it is reminiscent of buildings at Mundelein Seminaryred
brick and white Bedford stone ala Colonial Williamsburg. This
church, dedicated in 1951, designed by architect Joseph W. McCarthy,
seats just 400, but has more than its share of startling artistry
within. As a backdrop to the mahogany altar of sacrifice and the
18-foot hand-carved mahogany crucifix, designed by artist Sister
M. Thomasita, OFM, is a Chagall-type stained glass wall. Its 76
dazzling slab glass panels, the design of artist/parishioner Raymond
Toloczko, contain 6,000 hand-cut pieces, the combined work of
artist brothers, Fathers Richard and Arthur Douaire. This blue
collar parish will mark its 75th anniversary in 2002. Committed
to passing on the faith, it has a unique bi-weekly Families for
Faith program for adults and children and a dynamic school. St.
Cyprians is small but full of energy.
