Ever wish you had a magical way to get inside someone’s head? Say, Cardinal George’s head? Ever wonder what’s he’s thinking about right this very minute?

Sorry, can’t help you.

But I can tell you what he was thinking about at any given time since 1998.

OK, this is a funky way of telling you about something New World Publications and I are quite proud of.

It’s our new Internet Web site, serving The Catholic New World, Chicago Catolico, the official Archdiocesan Directory and other publications we offer.

One of the new attractions on the updated site is an archive of every column Cardinal George has written for us. In just a couple of mouse clicks, you can read the cardinal’s Dec. 27, 1998, musings about a child’s book in Latin:

“‘Quomodo Medicus nomine Kevorkian Christi Natalem abrogaverit.’ Some days ago I received as a gift a little book which has made a minor stir among Latin buffs. It is a translation from English into Latin of Doctor Seuss’ famous children’s book, ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’….”

See, what did I tell you about knowing what the cardinal was thinking about?

Actually, the archive section of the Web site is only one of several great things.

But let’s begin at the beginning: Several years ago, even before I joined New World Publications, staffers had understood the great potential of the World Wide Web and created an Internet presence for The New World.

Because of resources—lack of them, to be honest—it was fairly limited, could only be accessed through America Online and usually contained limited information for a brief span of time.

The new site—see it at www.CatholicNewWorld.com—is, like its predecessor, the vision and design work of NWP’s production supervisor Kathy Gabriel. But the Internet world has changed, and Gabriel has been learning, too.

There’s everything from full-text versions of many of the articles and columns in our weekly edition to subscription and advertising information. And much more.

We’ve added many links to other Catholic sites, beginning, of course, with our own Archdiocese of Chicago Internet site. There’s even a link to searchable “Catechism of the Catholic Church.” You can email us through www.CatholicNewWorld.com, order an archdiocesan directory, even advertise. There’s even a picture of me atop this column.

Yes, I think we are justifiably proud of what Gabriel has created. It’ll evolve even more in the future. I hope you’ll visit us on line and tell us what you think. But I also hope it will spur readership of our regular weekly edition, which contains even more good stuff.

We understand that communication isn’t something that’s limited to newsprint. Both are vital means of evangelization and communication to Catholics and beyond.
