Observations
Here we go again!
It had to happen: media hype about devils, exorcism and things evil.
Just days before this weekend’s re-edited, re-release of the film, “The Exorcist,” comes the Page One-filling headline in the Chicago Sun-Times: “ARCHDIOCESE GETS EXORCIST.”
To which a knowledgeable Catholic might justifiably respond: “And so...?”

Black Catholics revive ‘the revival’

It was a call to holiness. It was a call to Jesus.
The three-day, three site Black Catholic Revival held Sept. 14-16 harmonized both of these vocalizations into a call for renewal within the archdiocesan black Catholic community by praising his holy name through song, liturgical dance and inspired preaching.

Missioners gather in Chicago

When more than 700 delegates gather in Chicago Sept. 28 for Mission Congress 2000, they will hearken back 91 years, to the first U.S. Catholic Mission Congress, held in Chicago in 1909.
“The very first mission congress was inspired in Archbishop Quigley’s living room,” said Holy Spirit Missionary Sister Maria Burke, director of the archdiocesan office for the Propagation of the Faith.

Nicaraguan’s prayer answered in Chicago

If one had only the infectious laughter and smiles exchanged between Nicaraguan Harry Correa Lopez and his “host mom,” Lourdes Castro, one would never believe he came to Chicago for surgeries that will save his life.

Churches open doors to devout ‘special effects’

It’s a big order, but the pro-life ministry of St. Linus Parish, 10300 S. Lawler Ave. in Oak Lawn, says its upcoming program can deliver.

Parish Pride
St. James Church
22400 S. Torrence Ave.

On a clear day you can look out the windows of the rectory and see the Joliet and Gary dioceses! This pioneer parish in the southeast corner of the Archdiocese of Chicago is situated where the Sauk Trail (Old Lincoln Highway) and Bishop Ford (Calumet) Expressway intersect.

Church Clips

Scene in passing — What southwest suburban rectory recently played gracious host to the cutest little flower girl and ring bearer left “waiting at the church” after all wedding Mass participants had gone to the reception? . . . Is there a prize for the tackiest amusement attraction? Winner would be the newest “Ride the Titanic, Thrill ride for kids and adults.” It’s a replica of half a ship made into a big slide to zip folks into the briny deep or in this case, a giant pillow. Fun disasters—what a concept!

Spirituality

Father Richard Rolheiser, who currently serves in Rome as general councilor for Canada for the Oblates of Mary Immaculates, writes about seeing Christ’s face in today’s priesthood.
