It’s transition time

September is a transition month. Vacations are over, kids are back in class and the promise of fall is in the air. So, this column celebrates transitions.

We are beginning our second year of special monthly Faith & Education editions which we provide during the school year to every family with a child in Catholic education. We’re very proud of this effort, providing an outreach beyond the usual Catholic New World. F&E brings news, information, advertising, comment and, of course, the words of Cardinal George to a much larger audience. These issues are our way of supporting Catholic education.

This edition is packed with helpful material for parents: exclusive interviews with Steve Allen on the sad state of television and Father John Smyth on the future of our Catholic schools and the faith of World Youth Day.

There are stories celebrating the growth of archdiocesan schools and on one shining example of that growth, the new Cardinal Bernardin School in Orland Hills. Also, we begin an important series tracing black Catholics in Chicago.

There is another important transition.

By the time you read this issue, we will have moved our offices from the Near West Side, New World Publications’ home for a dozen years, to 721 N. LaSalle.

That building houses Catholic Charities offices and has a rich tradition of service to the archdiocese. It was the site of St. Vincent’s Hospital and, later, St. Vincent’s Orphanage, two facilities which did much to assist many Chicagoans over the decades. The Catholic New World, with its 108-year tradition of service, is pleased to share such storied quarters.

The newspaper has been a bit of a wanderer during those years, as Mary Claire Gart’s story on Page 5 points out.

We hope you’ll take the time to explore these articles, and others as well. We also hope you’ll be patient with us as we get settled into our new offices, change phone and mail service over the next weeks. We plan to be back for our next issue on Sept. 17. See you then.
