Catholic New World, Catolico earn Catholic Press awards The Catholic New World, and its sister publication, Chicago Catolico, were among the honorees recognized by the Catholic Press Association at its annual convention held May 24-26 in Baltimore. In the category of best promotional house ad, Catholic New World production designer Kathy Gabriel won first place for the papers Spend small change; see a big change campaign. (The ad appears on Page 20.) The judges, in their critique wrote, Says a lot with very few words. Dual advertising and circulation message works well. Second-place award winners from CNW include: Michael D. Wamble for Individual excellence, writer/editor; James T. Chiampas for Best Use of Wire Service Graphics Faces of War; David V. Kamba (free-lance photographer) for best general news

The April 18 Faces of War cover by Chiampas was lauded as a dramatic composition of photo illustration and ... typography which carries the group of stories seriousness of conflict and hardship to the refugees. Kambas Life Story photograph was critiqued as powerful. The judges continued, A good job by the photographer for keeping ones eyes open and looking beyond the obvious and capturing a wonderful image. The Catholic New World Advertising Department received two third-place awards for best special supplement with an advertising emphasis and best example of effective advertising promotion, for its work on the papers annual Senior Fair. The Catholic New World also received honorable mentions in the categories of best feature story (Driving Miss Mary by Mich-elle Martin) and best single ad-color (Y2K-Hes Y there is a 2K by James T. Chiampas). Chicago Catolico, the Spanish-language archdiocesan publication won first place for best writing on a National/International event for Las arquidocedis de Mexico y Chicago that examined the ties between the archdioceses of Chicago and Mexico City. The Spanish-language paper also earned awards in categories that included: Second place, Best Column, General Commentary; Second place, Best in-depth analysis for Adoptions Mexico-Chicago; Third place, Best Lead Article, Maria del Carmen Macias. Liturgy Training Publications (LTP), also part of the Archdiocese of Chicago, received five awards from the CPA. They included two first place honors in the categories of liturgy for The Liturgical Documents-Volume Two, and first-time author of a book, A Calendar of Care: Reflections of a Country Pastor by James Schmitmeyer. LTP also earned third place awards in the categories of liturgy,
gender issues and reference books, and an honorable mention for
design and production. |
