Medicare warns Loyola hospital

In a statement issued May 9, Loyola University Medical Center responded to threat of losing Medicare and Medicaid funding made in a notification letter from the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA), a federal regulatory agency, as a result of a recent incident that questioned the security of the hospital.
On the night of May 1, a newborn was kidnapped from the university's medical center. The infant was found dead near the residence of his alleged abductor since charged by local authorities.
The HCFA letter included the survey results of an Illinois Department of Public Health visit to the university’s medical center.
Describing the on-site visit as “an appropriate level of state and federal scrutiny,” the medical center’s release also stated, “Loyola believes that we have already implemented a full plan of compliance in response to HCFA concerns.”
Among the changes the center stated it has made in its security system since the tragic incident were an immediate repair and test of the electronic security doors to the nursery unit and 24-hour security personnel assigned to the nursery.

Loyola U. head Piderit resigning

Loyola University’s president announced his resignation effective June 30, 2001, or upon the appointment of a new head for the Jesuit-run institution.
In a letter to Michael Quinlan, chairman of the university’s Board of Trustees, Jesuit Father John Piderit wrote that he would end his eight-year reign at the end of the next fiscal year.
During the past three years, Piderit has faced public criticism from university instructors and students concerned over financial cutbacks and restructuring at the university. Changes included the 1995 reorganization of the university and its medical center into two units.
Last year, faculty members at Loyola gave Piderit a no-confidence vote in protest over proposed cuts in academic programs as the cost of tuition increased.
“On a personal note, I have great admiration for Father Piderit as an individual who has faced the very difficult task of stabilizing the university financially while ensuring that its programs grow and its character flourish,” said Quinlan of the outgoing Loyola president.

Sisters honor women of the Bible

Joan Fraser-Scannicchio and Denise Fraser-Vaselakos had always wanted to find a Christian, creative business they could do together. After their mother died, they decided to move forward to make sure the idea did not fall by the wayside.
And thus, Womynsense was born. The company makes a line of greeting and note cards that glorify the women of the Bible—particularly the mothers. Full story available.
